I recently took the head off my '80 XS1100G due to it sounding like it had blown a hole in the head gasket. To my surprise it didn't even have a head gasket on it. But that is not the main problem. In the middle of #3 Piston is a hole about the size of a pencil in diameter. Is there anywhere that I can get new pistons for this bike? I have looked at a lot of sites and all I get is "Part Discontinued", That is really getting annoying. Is there an alternative part I can use, like a piston for a Seadoo or something? Any help would really be Appreciated.

    Thank you

Wraith - I've seen several complete jug sets (used) on ebay recently. Here's one for $.99. That's probably going to be the cheapest route. Or you could bite the bullet and put a Wiseco Kit in it. Or you could contact Andreas, and see if he has anything in stock - again, used.

As far as new pistons go I think you're stuck with boring to 1179 or 1196 Wisco kits.I have a used stock piston if you want to try that.PM me your address and I mail it to you.

Sorry Knight I didn't get to the post office today.I got served papers because an old business partner reopened an old parts account last year that had my name on it,and didn't pay the bill.I had to mess around with lawyers.Looks like I'm ok but he's in big trouble. What can you expect from a Kawasaki rider?LOL I'll be able to mail your piston tomorrow.

How many miles are on the current motor, and what CAUSED the hole? Was it just a lean condition?

              Pistons

Yeah Tod, A buddy of mine works on bikes alot and said that it looks like it just got to hot and started to melt the piston due to it running to lean. I never checked that on the bike after I bought it. Sounded like it was running good so I didn't mess with it. As for milage it has about 62000 on it. Number 2 piston looks like it might have been starting to melt as the center of it is beginning to cave in like #3.

If you're just wanting something to run for a bit, then ok, but it probably wouldn't hurt to check the cylinder bore. After a while, they get egg shaped front to back. You could also pop the rings off your holed piston and check the end gaps... stick them one at a time into the cylinder and push them down in level with the piston top... and check the end gaps with a feeler gauge.

If you can find a second one, I'd replace that partially melted one also, along with a LIGHT honing in the cylinders getting the "new" pistons so the rings can get seated.

Also, with the head off, you could lay the head on it's side and pour a little fuel into the ports and let it sit for a bit and see if your valves are all still sealed. When done, flip the head over and do the same to the other side.

Just a thought, but not my bike...

Thanks for the advice Tod, I will do that. My buddy is a good mechanic but tends to lean more toward Kawasaki and honda, my expertise is aimed more toward cars, helicopters and the occasional dirtbike or jetski.

                          Piston

Hey Terry Got the Piston and it fits perfect thanks. Now I just need to find one more and I will be in business. #2 piston is beginning to warp the way number three was before the hole. I took it off and took it work with me to have it NDI tested (Non Destructive Inspection). The eddi current check reveil micro cracks acrossed most of the top of the piston so it is a good thing I didn't just try and reuse it.

                          Jeff
