  • 1980 XS 1100G Speedometer

I have an 85mph speedometer on my 80 model.
    I have a 4.00 x 18 Continental K112 rear tire.
I wanted the rpm values for various speeds above 85 mph while in 5th gear.
I found these years ago in a Rider Magazine.
    90 mph=5900 rpm
    100 mph=6560 rpm
    110 mph=7220 rpm
    120 mph=7875 rpm
For speeds inbetween the values use a quick interpalation.
    Hope this is useful.
Also will a 160 mph speedometer work on the 1980 G model without any modifications?
    Any info appreciated.

Yep the 160 speedo will work. The electric plug is different...one of them has 4 wires (guage light, turnsignal speed sensor, 2 grounds) and one has three wires (guage light, turnsignal speed sensor, 1 ground). Cut the plug off your old one and splice it onto the new one. Splice the two grounds together to make one...

I was able to transfer to a 160 speedo using the wiring from the old speedo. It works fine. Mine is a special, but they should be pretty much the same. As was said, the only difference is ground wires. 2 on a pre 80, and 2 into 1 80-up. I wouldn't splice any more than you have to. Too much of that can cause headaches for electricians like me down the road.

Both of you above guys, thanks for the info. Now, I need to find a 160 mph unit, anyone know of one?

Watch ebay Dave. Thats where I got mine. Or you can do a motorcycle parts search on Yahoo. Some data bases are monitored by many salvage yards. But usually on ebay, you can at least see a picture of it before you buy it. I even got a NOS one in the original box for my old mans standard. It was about $80 I think. Search for yamaha xs1100.

            Dave,
I also own and ride an '80-G with the 85 mph speedo. Now here is what has me scratching my head. I'm using the original 17 inch rear rim. Did you change out your 17 in. for an 18 in. rear rim? Does the tach. to speedo conversion you quoted from Rider Mag. take into account the 18 in. or the 17 in. rear rim?
Your tach conversion is very useful; I'm just wondering if I can apply it to my O.E.M. 17 inch rear rim running a Dunlop MT90 HB17 rear tire [Elite Two]?

I wonder about the same, but the opposite direction...I have a 16" rear from a Special mounted on my '81 H. If I'm thinking correctly, that would mean my rpms would be higher at a given speed than it would w/the 17" rear, right?

How quickly do y'all get into triple digits and beyond? The best I've seen so far is about 6300 rpm in 5th, but I've also been babying the motor a bit as I have less than 1000 miles on it since getting the bike. I'm pretty sure my tach is not healthy, though...rather sticky and sluggish from years of sitting. I would bet that it's revving higher than 6300 on top, and I'm almost sure that it's idling lower than the 1800-1900 that it seems to never go below (except when shut off, then the needle usually only drops to 1000). Anyone have a good tip for freeing one up w/o ruining it?

I don't know how to "free-up" a sticky tach, but I do have a tach from a Midnight Special that I will share. The Black housing is kinda rough, but then you don't want the black can on a Special anyway. I would imagine that you can just swap-out the guts.

Thanks for the offer, but I need a Standard tach.

                    DOH!!
I guess that I was not reading very closely.
Actually I believe that I still have a Standard tach also, from a 79F.
If you can't get yours working, let me know, I will dig it out.

                      Patience is a virtue....

My 81 sh sat for a couple few years before I got it and I had the same prob with the speedo and tach being sluggish. All it took was some riding time and the tach started working, then after another week or so later the speedo started working too. I dont know if I just got lucky or it just takes awhile for the innards to free up.
Maybe give it a bit of time and they wiil wake up.
                      Good luck
