    Hello all!

    Been part of this forum for a couple years since I got my 1980 XS1100SG Special. Haven't visited in a while, but need some thoughts for an issue that I couldn't find answers to by searching the forum.

    Last time I visited, I had issues with the motor bogging down/going flat in the at 2-3k rpm when at light throttle cruise or sometimes when accelerating. Worse when the bike is warming up. Just a quick downshift to bring the rpm up a bit and it instantly is gone (or pull in the clutch and blip the throttle). ...BUT I don't usually run the tank down past half way.

    That leads me to where I am now...

    The last two times I've run the tank down to where there is probably 1.5 gallons in the tank (but nowhere near reserve, about 80-90 miles into the 4 gallon tank), the bike loses it's steadiness at idle (set at 1100 rpm +/-) and will stall.

    Basically, starts to stumble while at a stop, and I have to blip the throttle to keep it from dying. As well, the bike is trying to do the same thing if I'm in low gear as when turning up my driveway, parking lots, etc when the tank is at this lower level of fuel. I have to feather the clutch to get engine speed up to keep it from quitting. Once up to a riding speed, it is fine.

    I have yet to do anything to the carbs, i.e. clean them, fuel lines, petcocks, etc, but they have never been off the bike (14,500 original miles, and otherwise the bike runs pretty darn well that I haven't felt the need, but I am fully capable and know my way around carbs). That is something I will do when the weather turns cold here in Colorado in a couple months.

    However, the issues I'm having with the bike at a lower fuel level (but not near reserve) tell me it's something not necessarily with the carbs, but fuel delivery in general from the tank.

    What does all the sage wisdom from you guru's have to say?

    First, you need to clean the fuel system. That includes the carbs. Take a couple hours this weekend and pull them apart and clean them. Tiny passages get clogged over time, and I imagine that is what is causing it to stall at low speeds. Your pilot jets are clogged. Do you have an Octy on your Special? Take that apart and clean in there too. Make sure it's not clogged, and the diaphragm is moving as it should.

    If you are noticing problems when the fuel level gets low, I would suspect 2 things:

    1. The above - passages are clogged, limiting the flow of fuel, especially when the pressure from gravity is not there to push the ful down from the tank (no fuel pump to help you there)

    2. The filter screens on the petcocks may be dirty, also adding to the limitations on the fuel flow.

      Also maybe the gas cap vent is plugged up.

        Just wait till you get those carbs off and cleaned, then sync'd. I'll bet you're going to think you've got an entirely new bike. Ever hear the phrase "yank your arms out of their sockets"?
