  • cam chain tensioner broke.. help!!!

Well her is thet story..I had my bike running fine about 2 months ago. Then the CCT (cam chain tensioner) set screw got striped. so I parked the bike and let it site for 2 months. I just finished fixing it, and now it wont start.
first thing I did was I did a manual CCT convertion.
    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...+tensioner+mod
then I took off the valve cover to recheck the vavle timming, to make sure the timing was not off due to the CCT breaking.
I did this by following the service manual. which told me to aline the cam dots ( . ) with the mark on the head.
Then have Cylinder 1 and 4 at TDC.
So when 1 and 4 are at TDC, the cam Dots were to be alained with there arrows.
I did this and everything looks good.
I manualy adjusted the CCT by checking the slack of the chain.
I rechecked for spark on all my sparkplugs, they all sparked.
I then took my carbs off and cleaned them.
put it all back together and tried to start it. But its wont fire up.
    It turns over fine.
The tank has fresh gas and brand new fuel lines and in line filters.
I have tried starter fluid with no luck.

I dont know what to do now help
    here are some pics

Did you do a compression test? Also, make sure you're not 180 deg. off. Check for compression on the #1 cyl with your thumb while approching the TDC mark.

Not to be picky but the pickup coil wire with the tape on it should be looked at also.Tape job looks like it could use some attention.IMO

well I did a compression test and I dont have any compressing what so ever. I put my hand in front of the carb as i crank it and I feel air being pushed out of the carbs instead of the vacum effect its suppose to have. there is a verly little bit of vacum but its mostly air being pushed out. I put my hand on the tail pip and there is very little air comming out. the pressure is not strong and there is a bit of air being sucked in. I think the timing of the the cams and the crank is off. Help.

Sounds like my first thought on seeing the topic of the post. You most likely have bent valves.

Yep, sounds like bent valves to me. Try checking the valve clearances.

Are these results before or after you installed the new head? The post date says today.....

As far as your other thread where you ask how to determine TDC and align the cam chain/cam sprockets, I've done that on other bikes but not on an XS. I'd rather let someone who has done this speak..

Sometimes you can get luck and not bend the valves when the chain slips a tooth on the cam sprocket. You can readjust and then check the shim-to-lobe clearances. Any that are way excessive means the valves are not returning...bent!

lol yea i know I need to give those wires some living.

Hmm I'll check the clearances to verify if i got bent valves of not.
I still and not sure how to put it back in time when i get the new head.
I cant find TDC on the timing plat. so what i did was i put a screw drive in the #1 cylinder sparkplug hole and just turned the crank till I had a estimate of TDC.
I dont know of a better way.
The manual dont really tell me.

You can get very close to TDC with the method you're talking about. There will be a point where the piston is at TDC where it doesn't really move. Watch where your wrench is at and find the point to where it just gets to TDC.. and where it just starts to go back down. Put the crank at the middle point between those two. The timing plate is notched and will go on at that point.

After that, do not move the crank at all. You can then install the head and cams with the arrows on the 3rd big cam cap pointing to the dots on the cam shoulders.

This is probably the trickiest part of anything on this bike in my opinion. It's simple enough in theory, but it would be really good if there were someone who lived by you that knew what they were doing to help the first time.

As for the different heads.. there's no part numbers that I know of, but you can measure a valve face and find out what you have.

just a stupid question the #1 cylinder is on the left side right? (Sitting on the bike) closest to the timming plate.
Its been a while since I've worked on the bike just want to check
