  • Need more power!!!

Anybody know any tricks? Need this thing to take care of a couple crotch rockets around town.

Ah, grasshopper, have you cleaned your carbs properly, and colortuned and sync'd your carbs with a vacuum tool, and made sure you have no dragging brake caalipers? If you have never ridden an XS11 in good form, you may not realize just how much of a crotch rocket killer you already have.

OTOH, if all this has been done, and you know you're getting everything out of it that it is capable of, you want to seek out any or all posts by member Dan Hodges.

These bikes have a lot of power, but are a lot heavier than a crotch rocket and aren't as nimble either.
You have your work cut out for you.I would be surprised if you could beat many crotch rockets with an XS1100.Now you could slay a ninja 250.....

Even with all the work Dan is doing/done, you'll be lucky to get 100hp to the ground. Today's 650/750s are making @ 120-130hp. If you beat one, it'll be the rider beating the other rider. All things equal, the XS is gonna get smoked.

Your best bet is to challenge them to an 800 mile race with 100 lbs of gear.

          Handicap

Make them handicap you. Heck.. These bikes are old, that should be enough of a handicap!!!! You will not out run modern day crotch rockets but they are not going to run away from you either except maybe a hayabusa.

you need to determine what you call crotch rocket...

katana 600's and 750's look like them but they are slow as dirt! and you should smoke any of the v twin 650's... i have pulled away from an 02 cbr 600rr. taking off from a redlight and several other 600's. the 750 and above is what you'll have the problem with!

also i have several street fighter mags from England... they have alot of track day times in there with locals bikes. it's funny the guys can barely run 11's on a busa! let alone 600cc's they were all in the high 12 -13 second range. if you put a youngster who doesn't know how to launch up against a bike that has about 40 more ft lbs i think you'll win!

It's best to leave the sports bikes alone, once they hit their power band their gone. Power, handling, and brakes are all on their side. If you want to beat them, just wait till they stop somewhere and make fun of the way they walk. All bent over and scrunched up.

A Garrett Turbo, 2052 with 51 trim IIRC, will add about 75 HP to the engine! But then, you still need to STOP and TURN!
As the others have said, the rider makes a BIG difference on the bike. On a good day, I can give most of the local 650-900 class bikes a run, but I still cannot outrun them.

on my best day i can stay ahead of my bro's 850 suzzy. his is an 1980 model with zero mods. Mine was piped and jeted ,with the washer under needle trick.(xj had non adjustable needle). i had killer throttle responce and a 13,1 best at the drag strip. i got severly smoked by a 600cc katana, real bad.but it is what it is. i'd fer sure take that 800mile race though....lol

It takes almost an act of divine providence to get 100 hp to the ground on a 1179-1196 cc XS and still be streetable. Yes you can increase the static compression ratio to as much as 13 to 1 and every point is a 4% increase in power however you can't run much over 160 psi on pump gas without problems with the Elevens head design and of course you can put a really big cam in it however anything over about 260 degrees @ .40 lift will not be a pleasure to ride except at high speed on the highway or the race track.

You can also use bigger carburetors but they won't help unless you have a really good head and a big cam with good exhaust. A scienced out naked XS with a 1179-1196 big bore kit and all the tricks will beat the original Harley V-Rod which had 1130 cc but it won't run with the current 1250 version. You can build an XS as big as 1311 cc's and still be streetable but it's expensive but even that will not beat one of the current 600 cc sport bikes which run mid tens in the quarter mile and near 160 mph on the top end. The little 600 crotch rockets only weigh about 400 pounds and have 110 hp plus at the ground and so I suggest stock XS owners concentrate on pushrod Harleys and most big metric twins and beware of crotch rockets.

If you have mods to share why don't you share them with all of us. Cody, Tod and myself have all put our stuff out for all to see and I've posted pictures of my head and everything else that it takes to make big streetable power but I admit I don't know everything and I'm always open to suggestions but I'm not interested in turbos, Nitrus and all that exotic stuff and yes you can make 120 hp with an XS but it won't be streetable.

Oh yes, a ported head needs a flow chart to judge it's effectiveness and you need a dyno test to judge the effectiveness of your mods, otherwise it's just a guessing game.

Yeah I know all that Dan and most of the GOOD info I have and the mods that make the most difference I got off your posts. But if I post it then I will get flamed for doing something wrong or different.I don't care what people think but when I have to constantly explain myself it just takes the fun out of it and that's the reason I do it in the first place.(just for fun)Thanks for all your help.
