          xs11 trike

i have contacted a couple uk members about their trikes and even a custom bike shop over there that offered a complete bolt up setup for about five grand shipped. i do know you can use a regular axle but you do have to flip it over and swap the brakes side for side and plug the vents. then you have to figure out axle gearing and tire size as well. good luck i'm am still waiting on my wife to buy me a welder before i make her trike out of my extra xs11.

            Hi 'rider,
if I can't sell you on the far simpler and better way of getting 3 wheels by the addition of a sidecar, it's far easier to build a foretrike.
All it takes is the front axles, suspension etc. from a small rear wheel drive car, some really well-engineered bracketry and an XS11 minus the front forks.
Like a CanAm Spyder but with character.
Careful design could make the conversion reversible so as not to enrage the purists.
So, leaving all those Lincoln and Miller catalogs casually laying about the house, are we?

Just spotted this thread (and replied to the OP via PM)....

Now, I didn't build my XS trike, although I was involved in it's build (kind of... well, I tried to understand as much as I could)....

The general consensus (and certainly my own opinion), is that just sticking a car axle on a bike frame and making it into a trike is a definite no-no - the stresses involved are completely different on a trike to a bike and the standard bike frames just aren't up to it (not to mention the higher center of gravity and overall geometry !)

My frame was built from the ground up, and suprisingly, probably the quickest part of the build (ok, it took 2.5 years to make the trike in total, but we did have a lot of hold ups / holidays / workshop meltdowns etc ;-)).

I don't really want to plug another site on here - but this one :

                      http://www.britchopper.co.uk/forum

                      - is full of custom vehicle builders (not just from the UK as the site name would imply) - they build *anything* 2, 3 or more wheels and can help out anyone who's interested in building a trike either from the ground up, or a (yuk !) swinging arm conversion.

I'm not sure on the legalities of building a 'new vehicle' in the USA, but in the UK we have to have new vehicles thoroughly inspected by govt. departments (vosa / dvla) so that they are legally road worthy - the guys on the BC site know the ins-and-outs of these laws, so they won't be teaching you how to 'bodge *' a build to just get it on the road (well... they could... but they build and ride their own vehicles so they want them safe ;-))

Good luck with the build / investigative work !

                      Cheers
                      Chris
