  • Question Regarding Kerker Pipes and Oil Filter Mod

    Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if there is an oil filter modification on the market for an '80 xs1100 w/ kerker pipes to gain easier access to the filter? Or some other typ'a trick.

    THanks

I have a Kerker, and just drop the pipes. If there is a mod, let me know.

A while back there was s discussion about using a spin-on filter adapter marketed for the Yamaha Venturer, I think. Drops the filter down a bit and uses a screw-on element, making oil changes easier.

Debate was about the vulnerability of the filter that low to the ground, and spin-on filter case resistance to puncture by rocks and/or road debris. Ill see if I can find the thread for further information.

Here is some info from a thread on the old Yahoo list:

Well, here's the deal as I see it. The Venture and the XS take the same
filter, same bolt same, O-rings, the only difference is the housing on the
Venture is short the distance of the spring under the filter. Here is the
deal, the Venture filter pointed straight out from the engine (horizontal)
the XS has vertical mount and with the length of the filter would cut the
ground clearance to an inch or so. If you can live with an inch or so of
ground clearance and are willing to accept the risks of cutting open the
filter...then go for it. RIVCO already makes the adapter you need.
http://www.rivcoproducts.com/ and get the Venture oil filter adapter. Here
        is the direct link

Anyway, I think you will puncture the filter and slide to an untimely, oily
death, but give it a try and let me know how it works out.

Was also some discussion about using a shorter spin-on filter, but don't think a specific filter was ever mentioned.

            Aftermarket exhausts and oil filters

Yeah - what a git of a job eh?

Seems to me that between the birth of the Jap superbike and the following aftermarket parts industry in the 70's right up to maybe as far as the early 90's most of the aftermarket 2:1 exhaust companies produced these damn things that need to come off to change the oil filter... GRRR

My Z1000 Marshal system is the same - but the downpipes are now seized in the collector part and it has to come off as one piece and be jacked back on to make it fit again..... deep joy.

As for the XS11 - my UK Motad system was marketed as being designed to allow access to the filter..... so someone was thinking about it.

There's my daily rant then!! No solution tho' sorry. I'd like to be able to vote with my feet. Drop the exhaust to oil filter change for a while and hope the damn thing rots quickly enough to mean I'll need to replace in a few years with a better design...... never works tho' as the darn things last quite a long time even in rainy old Britain

So I guess there really is something better about my MAC 4-1 system even though I had to heat and bend the living heck out of it to get it to look like it belonged on something other than a honda 90! I can change my oil! .............Garry
