  • From my handlebars to my tailights...

Looking to do a little renovation of the bike of sorts....need some advice

My taillight cover fell off and broke will this fit from MikesXS

Tail Light Lens - Short Rectangular Type - Fits: Some XS650 (1978-80)
    OEM Ref.# 1M1-84521-60

Also my left rear taillight is a little limp from a bad seal thing, where can I get one of those?

Would I have to get crash bars to have highway pegs...I desperately want to put my legs foward on long trips but don't like the look of crash bars.

Last but not least i would really like to try out some smaller handlebars...mainly for the look of them...my main concern is how much they will change my riding stance, but I wouldn't mind leaning forward some. What would be the optimum choice? Here are a few I was considering...

    Clubman/Cafe Bar - Chrome
    Width - 27 3/4" - Rise - 4" - Pullback - 1 1/2" x 7/8"Dia. Part #25-0109

    Drag Bar - Chrome
    Width 27.5" - Rise 0" - Pullback 3 3/4" x 7/8"Dia.Part #25-0051

All else I would need to buy is grips right?

    I like this look... http://fc04.deviantart.com/fs42/i/20...miketappan.jpg

Any advice/experience would be greatly appreciated.

Ready to make her my own!

I have highway pegs without crash bars. I wish I had the crash bars though. They came with the bike, and I've never seen them anywhere else, so I don't know where to direct you to get them.

You do know that switching to smaller?handlebars -like the drag bar you listed does have its disadvantages correct? My 99 ZRX has bars that are stock and put the riding position forward -cant imagine putting alot of mileage per day with that forward position.I have switched bars on my SG before but the most comfortable position for me might not be right for you.If you do want to put smaller?bars on you also have to keep in mind the controls such as brake and clutch levers and the other switches might look all bunched up-it can be done but i would keep that in mind.

Café sport bars. Can't tell you the exact rise or run, but I do lean forward a lot when I ride. One thing to consider when adding the smaller bars, you need to add on to your steering stop or the controls will hit the tank and dent it. What I did is documented in the link in my sig. Somewhere around the last page or two. Your bike will handle a bit different with the Café bars as well.

EDIT: Ohh yea, there's also info in that link about running standard length grips on the XS. The stock grips for this bike are shorter than normal.

          Hey CA,

First, yes, that tail light lens is the same small squarish one that fits the 79SF XS11...surprisingly the 79SF 650 uses the wider 2 bulb housing, but the small one will be a perfect fit..same exact OEM part #!!

Secondly, you might also look into getting some setbacks/risers for the bars to help reduce the amount of lean forward that you will encounter with the smaller/shorter bars! However, if you haven't noticed, the steering is a bit heavy in it's OEM format, and using shorter/narrower bars can make the steering even more difficult, especially at low speeds.....YMMV!

The cruise pegs like on Bugs bike are the other style that you'll want/need to find which mount to the frame, and still allow them to be positioned low beside the crankcase covers. The clamp on cruise pegs need the engine guards to mount them on so that they will be down at a comfortable position. Trying to put them on the frame above the engine puts them in an uncomfortably high position.

Also, as stated, the front MC on the special is tilted at a unique angle to fit on the specials buckhorn bars. It will work on flatter bars, but it may appear a bit funny looking since the reservior will be sitting at a sharper angle.

I too like the look of the smaller bars but beware what looks cool isnt always comfortable. I switched mine to drag bars and love the looks but on long rides my arms tire a little. my elbows lock inwards and I lean forward more. Its not real bad but no ideal for those long road trips. I added a 1 inch riser that helped the bars clear the tank. I might look into other bars but hate to lose the style of the bike but would like to sit back a little more. sometimes you just need to try them to see if its what you want,I think thats why we have so many spare parts. Good luck with whatever you choose

              Great help!

You guys are the best.... that gives me some stuff to chew on...my brother calls the stock handlebars a little cowboyish but dang it they are pretty comfortable...but with smaller ones it would look pretty fly, so I think i may give the others a shot since I'm not looking at any long trips for a while...I like yours silent.

Any ideas about where to buy those pegs described above or a turn signal seal?

Oh and Furious 4 you have the most beautiful xs1100 i have ever seen. I want to be just like you...lol. Once I get out of school I have a good winter project....

                  Hi CA,
that lens should fit, that is, it looks like the lens on my son's XS750 so most likely Yamaha put the same tail light on everything in '79.
You ain't got no "left rear tail light". If you mean the signal light and if the "seal thing" is the rubber bung that holds the signal in the bike frame, try parts'n'more or bike bandit.
Perhaps you could find highway pegs that weren't part of a crashbar set-up but it'd take a deal of looking. Easiest is to get the crashbars and learn to love the way they look.
Or spend a small fortune on a forward control set-up.
Yeah, anything's better than the stock rototiller bars, right?
I found the Honda CB750 bars to be perfect for a short old fat man on a sidecar rig but your needs are different. It may take a few different bars (buy them cheap at swapmeets) to find your perfect bar.
The rightside grip moves with the twistgrip so it's no problem unless you need a new grip anyway.
Squirt WD40 under the left grip to get it off undamaged. Another squirt to put it on the new bar. It will slither about at first but be firm the next day.
BTW, leaning forward onto the new bars with your feet on forward pegs may not be as comfortable as you imagine.

A nice little trick is to use the passenger pegs at speed, it puts you in a more comfortable position at speed
