  • xs 650 starter

ok I got my hands on the wrong kicker. I (would assume) have the xs650 kicker with the folding lever. It clips the brek pedal , and or the muffler. Any way to adjust or fix this or do I just need to find a trade? The standard kicker does not fold and is the emergency kicker. I hate to ride around with that being in the way. Any ideas?

      folding pedal

I was/am looking for the folding pedal. Thought I found one locally. Paid 20 bucks and brought it home. Should have brought my emergency kicker to compare it to. DAmn Ebay parts people... ugggghhh.

So now I have the emergency kicker for the xs1100 and what I assume to be a xs650 kicker. Problem is it hit the brake pedal on the downstroke then the muffler.

So since I didn't compare I need to Rig/Bend/shim The folding 650 kicker or Start over.

          Hi Gary,
The stock kicker is for emergency only and lives hidden away unless you need to use it. And yeah, the XS650 kicker don't neck out far enough to clear things.
The XS750 kicker necks out a fair bit further and might work for you.

            850 kicker

ok, So i stopped by Skips motorcycle parts and traded for an 850 kicker. It does not have a huge divit like the emergency kicker , but does have a heck of alot more angle to it. Think it is going to work. Now I just gotta clean it up and buff off all the surface rust....UUUGGGGHHHH

You'd be amazed at what a little rust remover will do for parts like that. I had to replace my choke lever, and look at what a short soak and a wire brush did for the new one:

I know some people have done this kicker mod for one reason or another: Looks vs. function.

Haven't seen any pics of the final result but then again mebbe I'm just too lazy to search the archives on the site.

Either way, if that 850 kicker works out, I'd like to see what it looks like.

I mean, I look down at that splined shaft on my bike and if I didn't know any better I'd say that something is missing. But then I've never seen what it would look like with something other than the emergency kicker attached.

What is your kick starter off of????

i like it, i'll be loking into a similar setup.
that and the emerg. one sucks, kicking my 11 over is a nightmare....
but then again i weight 174.... perhaps it's an operator issue....

                          Urban Myth??

                          (Fingertips together....)
                          Exxxcellent!!!

WHoa! I was expecting one of those with a wide/flat rubber at the top. But Duh, that's not what came as OEM as kickers on a Yamaha 850, right?

XS1100's were last of the big bikes to offer a Kickstart. (True? or False?)

The kicker is off an XS850. I scored it on Fleabay for $15 delivered. I couldn't tell you if the XS was the last of the big bikes, but I'm glad my '79 has the internal ratchet assembly from the factory

                            And it's Technique, I only weigh 165

                              technique

OK so whats the technique? GIve us some details please.

Think mine is off a 750??? NOt sure. I know it clears alot better than the 650 i traded. Only clips slightly at the bottom of the stroke if i over kick.
