  • Parts cross over

I may not be using the right search criteria, lord knows I have tried every combination I could think of, is there a current listing of what parts from other bikes will work on our XS11's? Like the headlight assemblies at Mikexs will work, turn signals, xs850, xs650, 750 XJ parts etc?

I am trying to make my list of where to purchase the replacement parts I need for my restoration, if I am unable to find them here or on ebay, knowing what other bikes to search parts on would definitely help for ebay searches and parts locating. If there isn't a current list, could one be put together and then posted/stickied or even added to the tech tips for those of us who haven't worked on these bikes forever and don't know first hand, or off the top of our heads, what parts will swap correctly?

    thanks

    Hi Tim,
no list AFAIK but from personal experience:-
All XS models will swap:- Front wheel, speedo, headlight, signals (Inc. DT360 but swap the 6V bulbs out) & rear caliper.
XS650 front brake disks will swap with all 3 XS11 brake disks, (Bro with drill press could make hole patterns in plain disks, Bro with milling machine could slot 'em.)
The ATE style front calipers on XS750, XS850 & XS11 Specials look the same but I've never tried that swap; same with the front fenders.
MikesXS handlebar switches should work for '79 & older but you may need to deal with different wiring colours and plugs.
What parts do you need? Most likely, whatever they are, someone can tell you what will or will not swap in from other models.

I don't think there has ever been a list made of parts from OTHER bikes that will fit on the XS's. There are a lot of parts that interchange BETWEEN the XS models, and some that will interchange with a bit of modification. You're probably better off just asking about individual parts, and someone with experience will be able to answer about that part.

I know some people have used forks from other bikes, and handlebars from all over the place (old Goldwing bars are favorites). Lots of possibilites, but it depends on how "Stock" you want to keep your bike. Personally, I try to maintain everything as "Stock" as I possibly can, especially with the visible stuff. But, there are others who go the exactl opposite route and have done lots of experimenting and modificaitons.

Thanks for the replies, what I meant by "other bikes" was other XS models, guess I should have been a little more specific I am currently at work and don't have my "wish" list, when I get home later I will grab it and post it.

From my other posts and from what I can think of, I know I need:
        - The round headlight assembly and turn signals (Mikes XS)
        - TKat fork brace (TKat)
        - The Elusive 79 special seat or seat pan
        - Left side engine cover
        - Left side foot peg mount (i think that's what it's called - aluminum piece that the foot pegs mount to as well as the muffler bolts to, found this out when I stripped my bike down, it's not suppose to be in 2 pieces
        - Horn(s)
        - Return spring for clutch cable (spring that is suppose to be under the clutch cable cover plate also discovered during tear down)

There is more, I just need to reference the list i have.

The 79 seat pan is unique, so that is the only year/model that will supply you with the right seat, unless you do some modification.
Left side engine covers will swap between all the XS11's AFAIK. Ebay has them regularly.
Left side foot-peg mount? Are you talking the triangular thing just behind the pipes? Those are on ebay too, and will swap between all the XS11's
Horns - get new ones. Several threads on here lately about which ones people have used. The originals are rather weak, so you're better off getting newer ones anyway.
Clutch return spring - will swap between all the XS11's, and I would imagine there are a few people with those things laying around, willing to send you one for the cost of shipping.

The '79 specials have their own unique side covers. They have two slots in the top like the standard '78 and '79 but are missing that extra peice in the top corner closest to the tank. You wont be able to place an '80's side cover on your '79SF without moding the tabs that hold them to the frame, as they use a round hole/peg inplace of the slot/tap thin-a-majig...Also, from my understanding you cant use the standard '78 '79 covers unless you change the seat and tank out for a standard '78 or '79...(right) I just found a nice RT hand side cover for my '79SF on ebay, hope I find the LF cover before you! Good luck with everything.

Hard to describe the aluminum piece I am talking about, the front foot peg bolts through it as well as the rear engine bolt, I will just take a photo of it when i get home and post it - it's actually the right side mount not the left so hopefully that didn't through anyone off.

Part #29 on this link is the aluminum piece I was speaking of

                  http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmot...m8240sch228270

Not too worried about the actual side covers (those are missing also) I have a line on a set in fairly good condition for a moderate price, I just hope they are still available when I have the money to get them

Kez, that aluminum footpeg bracket you speak of, make sure you get one off a 79-81 XS11 Special, the Standards are different.

                      Hi Tim,
                      part #29 is for a Standard & won't fit a Special.
The Special part don't have a cast-in bearing boss for the rear brake, rather, there's just a clearance hole. That's why it's so skinny at that point and breaks in half. The good thing is, that don't matter. The front half is just a fancy spacer for the rider's footpeg while the back half has enough fasteners to keep it in place while it holds the passenger footpeg on. Admittedly an unbroken part looks better but that it's in two pieces will not matter to how the bike works.

I have a set of those alum brackets from an 801100G that I'm not going to use. If you decide that they will work let me know and we can work something out. I also have the brake lever and old master cylinder that I won't be using.
