Then Helping Hands is the tool for you. It makes it sooooo much easier to solder those little wires. The one I've got came from Radio Shack, and cost almost $30. For $2.99 you can't go wrong. I just thought I would pass it along.

Clearly Superior
I've had one similar model like that for years now. Comes in handy for a lot of other uses: Last used to hold carb parts while I hosed them down inside and out with carb cleaner.
Mine doesn't have the magnifying glass though. I just turned 50 and so the eyes aren't what they used to be. Combine this with the fact I intentionally refuse to wear my reading glasses and so when I solder wires it looks as if I went with "the bigger the blob...the better the job!" I'd hate to see what they really look like all magnified and clear...
I paid way too much for the one I have: Radio Shack version.

Yup Larry, I'm feelin' ya there. I just had to fix a wire on my pickup coil, our soldered connections probably look quite similar.
I refuse to get reading glasses. ( hard head )
I better get the one with a magnifying glass if I can find it.

Pick up coil fix and advance mod
In my years one thing I learned is don't solder when vibration is an issue because it will focus the energy at that point.Trim down a small but connecter or tiny pipe, overlap the wires crimp and shrink tube. One other thing the reason for most* ignition breakes is the vaccuum advance is ported to one cyl. At idle which we all spend alot of time at,it's doing the green apple two step.I cut the advance tube a put a damper in line and it smoothed the pulses out. This is a twoway vaccuum delay check valve which pulles easy one way and has a gradual restriction the other. It is off mid 80 corolla fornt of the engine the # on it is 01014 it has a red top opaqe center and a black back* it is about 1" round by 3/4 thick.I put the normal pull on the advance side but if your in a hot climiate and run cheap gas the other would save exaust valves. This has worked well* for me,the only problems with this bike is Tacks & Pickup coil wires and I have those beat.Hope this makes someones life better as it's sure helping wy typing.Spelling next.

Vacuum Mod Squad?
Yeah, soldering those connections like I do would add a huge lead weight right where it would bounce the most.
Next time I pull off that cover for those pick-ups I'm going to take the time to really look at how much that vacuum causes things to dance. (I googled the green apple two_step...Cool!) I know if the vaccum line to the vac advance is connected to the carb boot inlet things really get-a-going. But I can't recall just how "twitchy" is was when connected to the correct carb vacuum. If it dances that two-step then I'll video it and post.
The vacuum delay you mention would serve as a damper similar to the way my carb sync tool uses small valves in the line to keep those gauge needles from bouncing so much that they become unreadable. Could prove to extend the life of those little wires by limiting the total number of "spasms".
This is the first I've heard of using a damper there but then again, I've only had my bike for a year. Been on Channel 11 for less than that. Doesn't matter though, does it? If it's a good idea then it stands on it's own merit, eh?

Sounds like a good idea. I wonder why it wasn't done to begin with.
Does it make the engine slower to return to idle because it holds advance longer?

Wet Blanket
I'm going with the notion that anyone buying a superbike would object to having anything on the engine which dampened anything.
I mean the first thing he would do is pull it off to release all that extra horsepower, right?
Gotta call it something more palatable like...."advance conditioner", mebbe??
What does it do?? Let's find out!!
(Don'tcha just love these bikes??)Last edited by Larrym; 08-28-2009, 10:25 PM.
