Ever since the dog dropped my bike (long story) it has run like S**T but this one thing has me totaly confused. The RPM speeds up from left to right. Turn the handle bars all the way to the left and the engine slows to below idle- all the way to the right and it will incremently speed up to 5000+ RPM. If you stop anywhere between it maintains the speed it was at( IE straight ahead about 2000/3000 RPM).This is while on double stand and relatively level. I have yanked the old throttle cable and grip - replaced the cable - but could not see it binding up. Checked all linkage and cable ends. At my wits end cause can't tune carbs till I fix this.Anyone ever see this or have any ideas?? Thanks.

It did not go all the way down just creased the tank against a table.

If you are sure you have the cable routed correctly (inside the right headlamp ear then as per diagram below) you could try slackening it off, turn to full lock, then adjust the cable.
Yup.. find the cable routing. It's getting caught/pinched on something making it too tight between there and the carbs. When you turn, it is pulling the whole cable, which is then pulling up on it at the carbs.

OR...it just doesn't have enough slack in the adjustment? I believe the manual recommended about a 1/4" of slack. The adjustment is right at the end of the cable at the right handlebar, that curved metal tube coming out of the throttle sleeve. Turn the bars all the way to the right, and then set the slack. It'll end up being a little more slack to the center/left, but at least it won't pull the throttle plate open and increase the revs/rpm!

After your posts I unthreaded the cable completely and it solved the issue. Don't know what caused it but with all the good advice I am on track again. Beer's on me when we meet! Now I can retune and RIDE!!!! THANKS!

Looking at the diagram. Does the cable pass over the first cross frame support or under it? Looks like over.

No the cable is routed just over the engine and below the crossframes. In the diagram is shows going thru to the LEFT side wire/frame bracket, and would then be run thru the left headlight ear and up to the bars, but this can put a bit more of a bend in it!? I think that's why Lamric said to run it thru the RIGHT headlight ear and then to the bars? However this could put the cable across the gauges and in your view! Mine runs up the left ear and to the bars. YMMV!

Just to clarify, on my bike, as per Yamaha instructions....
The throttle cable comes from right handlebar, down inside of right headlamp ear, does not pass in front of gauges, goes under first cross frame member.
Sorry, had read other threads and then came back to this one and had CLUTCH on my mind, not throttle cable!
