So I successfully rebuilt the frozen master cylinder on Incubus, the project XS11. It works so well, in fact, that both calipers froze when I used it. I know I cleaned out that little splooge hole in the master - made a point of it - so I immediately suspected the front calipers were not retracting properly and would have to be cleaned out. It made sense since I already had to transfer all three brake lines from the parts bike because the brake lines on Incubus were completely clogged with dried up brake fluid.
I got the right side caliper apart was very pleasantly surprised at the very nice condition of the piston. There is NO pitting, like someone had replaced it not long before the bike was parked to petrify. I pulled the seal, though, and that was a different story. It has a thin spot, like it was not exactly the right seal but someone forced it in anyway and it folded. Cheap as I am, I tried to reuse it anyway - there will be time to spend money on this bike, but that time is not now. It didn't work, though. The piston slides in and out easily with no seal, but it cannot be forced into place when the seal is in. The seal just doesn't sit flat all the way around. That thin area kinda buckles and causes a high spot.
I have front calipers on the parts bike, but it is a Special and the calipers won't work. (Both bikes are '79s). Before I go to the trouble of tearing them down to pull the seals, however, I wanted to make sure the seals would work with my calipers. The Yamaha parts fiche shows different part numbers for the caliper kits for each bike, but those kit also include the dust seal, so I don't know which part (or both) is different.
Has anyone tried Special seals in a Standard caliper, (besides, perhaps my PO)?
