  • Lost #3 and #4

I went for the longest ride (2hr) since TC and I did the 2nd gear fix and other repairs. About a hour into the ride I lost carbs 3&4. Started out by backfiring (I was doing 60mph at the time) then they just cut out. I pulled over and looked around and saw that there was no gas in the fuel filter and there was a kink in the fuel line. I worked it out with my finger and the bike started right back up but it gave me a little problem before it started running great again. My question is would a kink on the left side fuel line cause the #3 & #4 to cut out and why did it start backfiring first.

to answer the question Yes and the reason it backfires is it is starved for fuel..everytime I run my tank of gas down to the point where it needs the petcocks switched to reserve...the engine gets really noisy and starts backfiring thats when I know its time to switch the petcocks...the fact that you worked the kink out and the bike returned to running normally is proof that a kinked gas line could cause the undesired effects you describe.

Yup.. If 1&2 or 3&4 together start missing, suspect fuel. If 1&4 or 2&3 together miss, suspect electrical.

Yup...and if its the no;4 cylinder not firing its probably a bent valve.

          Hey "Al",

Looks like it's time to actually go to your local bike dealer and get some of that real GREY rubber single walled fuel line, and replace all of that old stuff that we weren't able to get to!

You can also run the right petcock over to the left two carbs and vice versa for a less sharp angle to the carbs. This GREATLY helps in eliminating kinked lines.
