  • Oil Filter Bolt Correct Style Question

    Hello,
I am building one XS out of two parts bikes and the oil filter case bolts are different on the two.

One has a spring loaded ball inside the bolt. The spring and ball are held in place with a roll pin. This is in addition to the larger spring and washer which goes below the filter.

The other bolt has nothing inside except the hollow cavity for the oil flow. The hollow bolt looks like it would allow unfiltered oil into the motor.

    Any advice? Thanks, Eric

Use the one with the ball & spring. Throw the other one away.

        Randy is correct,

That ball/spring combo is the bypass so IF the oil filter gets too clogged up, then the oil pressure will push thru those other holes and the ball up to keep feeding the engine oil so you don't fry your bearings. As you noted, the other large washer/spring is to push the filter up against the engine case and position it so that it fits around the upper holes in the filter bolt where the filtered oil will flow thru the filter and those upper holes and into the engine.

Thank you to all for the replies. Very helpful.

The non check ball bolt really looks like oil could bypass the filter. I'm going to noodle this a little......

Does anyone know what year the check ball bolt style was added?

          Best regards, Eric

AFAIK all yamaha's had the check ball. In fact every bike i've ever owned that use a cup & cartridge filter had a check ball in the bolt.

The oil WILL bypass the filter w/o the check valve.

As TC explained, that's the function of the valve, to stop oil from bypassing unless the filter clogs up.
