  • 1979 std seat?

I have a seat I recently purchased for my 1980 special and when I got it home it did not fit. It is exactly the same size and fit of a 1978 with a plastic cowl but the seat is made all together. My 1980 seat pan is one piece but this one has an extra factory piece of metal welded on back end. I don't need it but would like to get some imput on what it came off of. I am thinking of selling it.

    here is some pics:

    Hi Wayne,
what's it look like underneath, eh? It's front tag looks about right but does it have the correct Weird Harold sliding side bolts? For interest's sake and I know the rear light bolts to it but would it fit if you took the grabrail off? The shape at the back is much like my son's '79 XS750 seat (BTW the XS750 seat pans rust out for a pastime so good ones are rare) except that seat hinges sideways.

      seat

It has the 2 bolts on sides and will set down on both my xs1100's (std and special) but the frame has to have the CDI box mounted on rear fender instead spot next to battery. If I take the box loose and lay it down in battery whole it sets down perfect; however it only lines up good on a std tank.

The straight sides on that seat say Standard to me. My '79 Special is running a '80 Special seat pan, and it dips down in the middle of the seat quite a bit. If the ignition box is in the way, that's another clue it's a Standard pan. My understanding is the Standard seat has the ignition module under the cowl instead of under the seat like the Specials.

        My 2 cents anyway.

That looks just like the seat that came on my 1980 standard. I don't know for sure if it came from the factory like that, or if it was added sometime later. But, if it doesn't fit with the black box, it is likely for the 78-79 standard as I believe that they had the box under the rear cowl.

looks just like the seat on my 79 standard touring model, minus the chrome trim strip on the bottom edge. Like this one (shameless plug)

I found a picture of mine on the bike. I had it recovered when I bought the bike, so the pattern is different, but the shape looks pretty similar. I have been told that these seats were an option with the touring package for the standards.
