  • Suggestions for bike disassembly by a newb..

I'm striping my bike down now, so that I can paint my frame a candy red.
Lots of stuff taken off, engine getting ready to come out. (just frame/engine/wheels/wiring now)

Any suggestions on removal of remaining items for a newb?
What to do to remove all the driveshaft stuff so I can remove engine?
I was having trouble removing any of the brake calipers so far..

It might be worthwhile for you to pick up a Clymer's manual. It has sections on all sorts of major repairs such as removing the engine, taking apart a front end,. etc, etc.

With a bit more confidence, or just lack of fear, you could just work away at unbolting everything you come across in no particular sequence. The Clymer's might help you work through things a bit more methodically, and which could help when it comes time to put it back together again.

Unbolt the 4 bolts that connect the middle drive on the motor to the driveline. If you're painting the swingarm also, just remove the rear wheel. If not, then take off the chrome swingarm caps, loosen the nuts, then unscrew the bolts with an allen wrench on each side and the swingarm drops out.

Trace the wires and unplug all connectors coming from the motor and unscrew starter cable. Also.. there's a ground plug attached to the middle drive back bolt. You can use the phillips and unscrew the screw where it attaches to the frame, or remove the allen bolt from the middle drive. All the plugs are different, so it's a no-brainer connecting them back later. Take off the oil filter cup and your left sidecover. Remove all the engine mounts. Pick engine up while turning the front to the right and the rear to the left.. watch your pickup coil timing plate and pointer on the front left frame and your rubber boot on the tail shaft. Then when engine is sideways in the frame, take it out the right side. Reverse order putting it back in.

The manual will walk you through the entire process, step-by-step. If you need one, you can download both versions from the link in my signature. Removal of the calipers is really rather simple, assuming they aren't stuck in the clamped position. You can usually just discommect the brake lines to release the pressure though, and the calipers will just slide off the rotors.

Take off the seat, rear brake caliper, rear fender, rear axle, final drive, middle drive. In that order (or something close, anyway).

          ....middle drive.
Why would you take off the middle drive?

Well, I guess I was just thinking a full disassembly, and that would include splitting the cases and all that stuff too. Might be a good time to look inside there and check on things, but you're right, it's not required.

I did mine this spring if I hadn't taken about a hundred pictures with a digital camera I never would have gotten her back together.

So I've got everything loose, and I removed 4 12mm bolts holding at the engine-driveshaft U-joint thing.

Lifting engine up, still seems like its attached at the driveshaft.
Do I need to remove those allen-head bolts to disconnect?

Have you looked at the manual? I've never removed the engine myself, but I know the manual walks you through it.

Sometimes the middle drive and the U-joint stick together. If you removed the 4 bolts, there's a little lip that hangs on to each other sometimes. Raise the front of the motor up and it should release.
