  • wierd ping...

I first noticed it yesterday riding around town. starting off low rpms in 1st & 2nd it would ping slightly. Since I hadn't ridden it for almost two months I just thought it was probably there before and just didn't remember.

Well today riding along the interstate I noticed it when accelerating at about 5000 rpms. It was hard to hear through the wind, but it seemed like when I would then let off the throttle slightly it would cut out just briefly. Off the interstate back in town, I started noticing it again. If I were driving along at a constant speed and hit the gas suddenly it would ping very briefly then go away.

Gas mileage is fine, (33-35) but power seems a little lacking when exceeding 5k rpm in 4/5 gears.

I switched to a higher octane fuel and it seemed to clear up the lower rpm pings.

The only thing I have changed, is I put in a K & N air filter. I first thought maybe vacuum advance was screwing up - but then I didn't think that should cause ping around 5000 rpm. I also suspect bad fuel?

    any thoughts?

The K&N could have changed your mixture. It may be running rich/lean (more likely lean). Check your plugs after a run.

Another possibility...have you done you cam chain tension lately?

    Good luck!

didn't notice the ping today at all. I did the cam chain thing before I went out today as well (much easier than I expected) So I guess it was either that or a bad tank of gas.

        Id bet on the gas.
