    Thanks TC and everyone else.

I'll be running diagnostics in the morning.

    I'll post the results.

FYI - I drove my diesel Suburban to work today and had to put some fuel in. Haven't had to fuel that big beast up since June 22 ! The Yamaha is paying for itself handsomely considering I spent $85 for 30 gals of diesel vs the paltry amount of gas the XS requires in comparison.

Here's the report. CLEAN the grounds before doing anything else.
I must have simply cleaned the site on top of the rectifier where the two (well three actually) ground wires connect.
Underneath was really pretty ugly, especially between the rectifier body and the frame on the north bolt.
Ran the diagnostics, everything looked good for the rectifier, cleaned the rectifier body, frame mounts, bolts and connectors and hey, you already know the story....14.5v at 3K rpm.
No stone unturned on these 30 year old bikes. Lots of time for molecules to be moved.
Thanks again for leading me down the right path.

Rode to work today. The tach is markedly better! It was pretty jumpy before. Much steadier.
