  • Are main jets always submerged?

    Hello,

After installing the head on my motorcycle with the new valve job, I've have a situation. It runs lean under hard acceleration.

I know it runs lean because I have a fuel/air gage with oxygen sensor hooked up.

I'd like to suggest to you guys out there that are having mixture problems that you may want to do the same. The only difficult part is that you have to remove an exhaust pipe and have a threaded insert welded in place so that you can screw an oxygen sensor.

In a perfect world you would have to install a sensor on each pipe to check each carb.

Since I'm drawing through one carb and pushing the mixture through a supercharger and into a plenum, one sensor does the job.

Back to my situation...Has anybody had the experiece of needing to make a mixture change after a valve job? It seems odd to me. I'm also using Dyna coils now which may be a factor. I don't know. The bike was running fine before I made these "improvements".

As I experiment with jets and float settings there is something that I'm unsure about. This may sound like a stupid question so be kind.

Are the main jets supposed to be submerged in gas all the time or is the gas sucked through an open space between the gas and the jet?

The main jet must be submerged in fuel to work properly. The fuel level in the float bowl needs to remain at a constent level (above the main jet) through out the RPM range.
