  • XJ/XS Fork swap

I posted a question about fork change for a xj1100. I was told my idea was not recomended. Now I have found a clean set of forks from a 79ish xs1100. Will this swap out with my 82 xj1100? I cant exactly go to the yamaha dealer and find a set of CLEAN forks. Where can I find these parts?

Break your forks down and compare parts. My guess is they will interchange.

This would be a job. You would need the brake calipers and fender from the XS; the XJ's components use a unique mounting patters and won't fit. The '79 forks are slightly smaller in diameter, so the XJ's headlight mounting "ears" may not fit correctly. The XJ's axle is in front of the fork, the '79 is in the fork, so you will notice some changes in handling.

The '80 - '81 XS models used the same diameter forks and axle arrangement; if you were to contemplate a swap I would recommend one of these rather than the '79.

In any case, you need to pretty much get the entire front end (less wheel/tire) from the donor bike to make the conversion.

They're close but not and exact match. Let me know if you need anything for them. I should have most of those parts from one of the bikes I parted out.

BTW, if all that is wrong is your stock for tubes are pitted, there's a chrome shop in Vancouver, WA that will rechrome them for $50 a tube.
