centerstand interchangability

Sorry people,

I joined the list of people who didn't pay attention to what page of the thread they were on.

I originally bought Two XS's one standard and one special. Could never figure out why it was so damned hard to get the special on the centerstand and the why the standard didn't even have a stand!! Another score for the PO.

Never had any trouble with the 920 Virago but I couldn't figure why I couldn't ape the SF up and on the stand.

Fredintoon...your suggestion to take the pivot bolts out to get the c.s. and attached spring closer to the post on the frame was a good one...I was then able with my bare hand stretch the spring onto the post and wala! Success to the Railroad!!!! Having a celebratory beer now too. No special tools needed...

My Cutlass had drum brakes on all 4 wheels. Lots of springs. A drum brake tool kit will do the job nicely.

Yes, with this tool it's a piece of cake. Actually you can use a set of vice grips. With the top hook of the spring fastened on the top pin on the frame, you simply take the vice grips and fasten them to the bottom spring hook and pull the spring down and clip it onto the eye/hook on the center stand. It's a straight down pull and with both hands on the vice grips and laying on my left side, it was no big deal. I think the XS looks cleaner without the center stand especially if it has a 4-1 header that exits on the right side and it weighs a couple pounds but a center stand makes the bike much easier to deal with, checking the oil and so forth.
