  • washer swap, just to be sure...

that's the washer between 5th and 2nd being swapped to fit against the collar of the countershaft, right?

and there is 1 washer swap and not more, right?

I am taking pictures of the reassembly of the gears and washers and C rings and all on the countershaft but I am not sure it is correct, does anyone have some illustration?

how many c rings on the countersaft total?

        3?
        1 between 4th & 3rd
        1 between 2nd & 5th
        & where did I put the one between 1st & 4th rite?

it goes from left to right:

        middle gear - large washer - 4th - C ring - 1st - C ring - small washer - 3rd - countershaft collar - washer (swapped) 2nd - C ring - 5th - clip

        can't find 3rd C ring

          Hey Greg,

Here's the Microfiche of the tranny and countershaft assembly!

The Middle Driven Gear, 1st gear with it's internal collar bearing, THEN the large washer #17, then C-clip #18, then 4th gear, then C-clip, washer and
3rd gear wheel, Next would be the 2nd gear wheel, but with the washer swap technique as Tod so finely illustrated in his thread, the washer would go next, then the 2nd gear wheel, then the C-clip, then the 5th gear wheel, but ofc it goes on only after you have the shaft in the engine, slid in from the outside of the case like when you first pulled it off.

          So...yes, 3 C-clips are needed!

            thx for correction & diagram

couldn't put the whole assembly back in the engine that way because of a couple mil. not clearing, figured: back to the interactive bible

I pray and swear at the same time

so middle gear touching the other gear then washer, and the 3rd C ring is a clip

On my 81 i couldnt get the shaft back in
doing the washer swap, let us know how you go,
the xj should be the same set up as my 81.
The bearing (31) and washer (29) is different to the earlier models.

I had more trouble getting it out than putting it back in:

either way it was wiggling that did it, first the left part down, pushing the 2 left gears so they would clear the side of a gear underneath. That gets the shaft close to the bearing. Then rewiggle on the other side so that 2nd gear clear the side of the gear underneath too -I know it looks like it won't happen. Wiggling technique: left hand grabbing and shaking the shaft on one or several gears that are fixed to it, and the right hand on the tire moving the wheel back and forth a bit. Didn't happen all at once, took several steps to sink in.

But I didn't have to swear, just kept at it by necessity rather than belief.

As for the forks, I use the C ring remover tool to get them, a breeze.
