  • 1ST Gear slippage

I was reading a previous post about clutch slippage in third gear. i have an 82 xj that slips in 1st gear under above average acceleration. as long as you take a slow start things are fine, but try to make a quick launch and its starts bucking. get into second and things are fine. the p o seemed to thing the shift for was bent but i am more inclined to thing i may have a clutch problem. i am content to live with it for a while but was curious if anyone else had a similiar problem. also is anyone aware of a aftermarket sorce for slip on's. i know mac has a direct replacement but it is the entire system. my head are in good shape. i just need new mufflers. i am looking for a direct match as to avoid any modifications. parts are scarce enough for the xj in my area to chance messing up something else while dorking around making a mod.

    cheers,

"bucking"? sounds like the gear prob to me. Slipping is slipping, the revs go up but speed does not. XJ's typically get the gear prob in first. kbam it jumps out and back in. The sooner you fix it, the fewer parts you will have to buy.

Also, slipping tends to occur in the higher gears at higher revs, like 3d gear above 5000rpm, all of a sudden the revs accelerate, unmistakable. Frequently this is fixed by clutch adjustment.

Ken Talbot has some good pages with info on how to fix the 1st/2nd gear jumping problem. I'm getting ready to do a job on an XJ in a couple of weeks, and will be taking lots of pictures and perhaps even some video, trying to make a step by step procedure guide for this common problem and remedy. I'm not sure if Ken will want to put it in/with his pages?? I may try to create a web page myself. We'll see once I get the job done. Do a search or browse thru the listings here on 1st and 2nd gear problems, and you'll find lots of info about it here, and go over to the links/tips section and look for the 2nd gear fix!!!

My 82 XJ had the same problem. In first gear it would slip if there was any kind of power applied. For a few months I was riding it starting out in second because first was useless.

The good news is this is very fixable. Read everything on this site related to the transmission. They will give you a step by step procedure to repair.

You can perform the entire repair with ordinary hand tools and a dremel. The only thing you may want to pick up is a good set of snap ring pliers.

I have been driving my J for 4 months now with not a skip.
