  • Ignition Upgrade Questions

    Hi Guys,

I had someone walk up to my my bike and we started talking about different things I could do. He said there was a kit that bolts right in place that replaces the black ignation box that sits under the seat. Has anyone seen theses upgrades and what about the coil? Does it replace the coil or do I still need that? Does anyone have any pros and cons of messing with the ignition and where I should go to get one?

    Thanks!!!

Dunno about the replacement TCI, but I have heard of people replace them when they die. Every Carb'd engine needs coils. That's what stores and shoots the spark to the park plugs. Definitely not going to replace them with anything other than replacement coils.

ALL gas engines have coils, carbed or not.

There are a few different high performance replacement coils available. Check out MikesXS they have 2 or 3 different types you can use.

Some people hae adapted the GM hi-energy module system to replace ignition units on many types of bikes. Sometimes to replace points and sometimes to replace the stock ignition.

        Ignition Upgrades

I have seen replacement ignitor boxes from down under but BEWARE . There is not a performance upgrade for these that I know of .Good to have an extra stock TCI . Coils - yes . Stock coils are weaker but often caps need replacing or wires cut little shorter to refreshen . Caps with less or no resistance may help the spark situation .
        Iridium plugs are recommended .
At the very least clean and di-electric grease every connection on the bike for preventitive maintenance ( not an ignition upgrade ) .
Pickup coils wires break so there may be an pre-emptive wiring job there .
Last but not least replace the fuse block .
