  • 2 Shorted Stators -Causes?

Question for the group: My stator had a bolt shorting the wire to ground that I suspect shorted out the stator by itself. I got another stator, tested resistances and made sure there was no continuity to ground before I installed it. Still no charging so I took the stator out of the case and checked the stator's continuity to ground out of the case. Shorted again! Resistances are okay between wires (~1 ohm) but it shows continuity from the wires to the metal ring of the stator. What could be causing this?

Here' the order I did things in:
No charging or headlight relay tripping (tach works)so cleaned & checked all connections.
Checked voltage reg/rec -field coil okay(feeler gage test) resistances btwn green and brown wires of volt/rec corect-ohms out of spec-got used one with good ohms readings.
Found short by alt. cover bolt-repaired wire-still no charge-discovered continuity to ground in white wires. Slight scuffing on inside of stator from rotor.
Got used stator that had good resistances btwn wires and NO continuity to ground before installation. Still no charge/voltage rise with rpms, green wire has .3V w/key on, never rises with rpms, brown wire has ~11.5V running and never rises with rpms. Do I just need to get a different stator and reg/rec to start fresh? Is a bad stator killing the reg/rec and visa versa? Is it the rotor touching it?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated because I feel like I'm just throwing money at it with no result.
    Thanks.

Chuck if your tack works my bet is you got the stator problem fixed.I think when your old stator shorted it probably damaged you reg/rectifier unit.

I had this problem, but it was from improper rotor installation. I figured just putting the rotor on the crank and torquing the bolt would work.. Nope. There is such a tight clearance between the rotor and stator, that the slightest bit off.. and it rubs. If it ever rubs, the stator is junk.

If you never removed the rotor... then I don't know.

        Stator mystery solved (hopefully)

Thanks for the replies. I was afraid the main bearings were shot or the crank was bent. It turns out the rotor was rubbing the stator because the left-most guide pin area of the engine case was broken. It allowed the alt cover to rotate about 2mm, just enough to let the stator & field coil rub against the rotor. The cover bolts didnt center it closely enough. I marked the two extremes of the cover's movement and bolted it down in the center of the range. What do you know, no rubbing. I've got a used stator on the way from Ebay, and you can bet I'll be installing it and the cover Very Carefully!

Even with the screws on, you could bump that case and jar it sideways and ruin yet another Stator. Go to your local shop and spend 4-5 bucks on another dowel pin. That will keep it lined up correctly.

Never mind.. I just re-read that where you say the CASE is broken? Sorry about that..

Custom Rewind in Birmingham, Alabama (800-798-7282) will rewind that stator to better than new condition...

Don't confuse that with a Tim Parrott Enterprises in Kellyton, Alabama who will rewind them also and is a CROOK. I paid him to rewind one and it shorted out after @ 3 months. He warranties them for 12 months. So I called.. then I got the run around about how busy he was.. then he said he isn't rewinding them any more so he was just going to refund my money.. then he quit answering any emails or phone calls.

Never saw a penny back. That's one guy who's azz I'd like to beat!

I've hear of others have problems with TPE too. Certainly one to avoid.

                    A question...
Is it possible for a rewinder to repair epoxy cracks in a stator?
Or are they trash if you get a crack in one?

I dunno, ask the rewinder. They have a toll free number.

From my experience, it's the sandwiched metal that the rotor spins right next to that's the important part. All that epoxy and winding comes off for a rewind.

BUT... it's still cheaper to buy the used ones right now instead of having that done.

To tell you how close the rotor spins to the stator... I had a piece of gasket stuck to the case on the bottom where the cover goes on. I was trying a new stator to see if that was my problem. I bolted up the cover and started the motor to check it... and it rubbed the stator and ruined it by having it cocked that little bit with the gasket on the bottom side but not the top.
