so if you guys can locate a source for brushes, I would love to use this mod!

Unless that XJ has 80k miles on it.. the brushes will be fine.

There are several people that have the brushes.. just not for Partsnmore prices.

      Hey Jessie,

That photo of MikesXS brushes does look very similar to this one:

These are on the Cycle-Re-Cycle Part II web site. Go to Electrical, then Stators, then scroll down to Yamaha...you'll find the parts for the XJ 650/750's, and they are there! They don't show the price on that page, but when you put them in your cart, they are just a bit over the PNM prices, but still 2/3's less than the BikeBandit's OEM $54.00...oh, forgot, that was the BB price for ONE BRUSH!

      ALTBRSH-CRB1 Alternator Brushes Small 0.25 - $ 14.95 TOTAL $ 14.95
This is $5.00 more than PNM, since they charge for EACH Brush @ $5.00 ea, or $10.00 for a pair!

The description says BRUSHES, so I'm pretty sure that the price is for the PAIR!!!...AHA,
Pair of replacement brushes for the electromagnet above

What's also interesting is that they(CRC2) show the same photo and part numbers for the brushes for the following HONDAs:
      CB650 '79-'82
      CB750 '79-'83
      CB900 '80-'83
      CB1000 '83

The Plot thickens...PNM site states for the CB650's that they use the same brushes...same PNM part # 24-2050 and has this description:

For 3-phase alternator systems. Must reuse old terminals
      Fits Honda: HONDA - 79 & up CB650/750/900/1000, CBX 79-82,
      Yamaha: XJ650, XJ1100
I would be surprised that PNM would quit carrying a part that is needed/used for all of these Honda models as well as the XJ's!? Anybody try to order them recently???

Oh well, at least you now have another relatively cheap source for these brushes!
      T.C.

PS, yeah, BUG, you should convert your tail/brake lights to LED's, each tail/running light is 8watts, 2/3's amp, and each brake light is 27 watts, 2.25 amps! The pilot box lights are also 8 watts ea, can save another amp or so there for the gauge lights, also license plate light! LED's only draw ~0.03 to 0.3 amps for running/tail-brake lights!!

      79SF "The Teacher" . . .basket case!

Yeah, I know... The utilitarian in me is fighting with the purist in me. Part of me wants to keep everything as stock as possible, but 2 of the existing lights on my trunk are already cracked, so I'm going to have to replace them eventually. I just have to convince the purist that it's ok to allow SOME improvements to be made. I have see how it looks with the big oval LED fixture, and I do like the look of it. They would definitely get more attention than the stock lights too!

Easiest way is to keep all the original parts. Pack them up in a marked box. That way it can be turned back stock any time.

Just tell yourself the original stuff is rare and has to be saved...

Yeah, I do that anyway. I had to take the headlight bucket and front siglas off when I added the fairing. I hate the fact that I had to use an XJ rear Master Cylinder, but I had to have brakes, and that was the only option. Other than that, I try my hardest to keep everything as stock as possible, especially on the things that you can see from the outside. So, since the Stator is hidden, the purist is slowly loosing the argument on that one.
