clutch slipping??

    clutch slipping??

    I recently took my bike all the way down to the frame for repainting. also replaced 1st,2nd,4th, & 5th gears. (THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE HELP FROM THIS SITE!!) Finally got it back together today and it seems to have a clutch slip. Wierd thing is that it only does it in third gear under acceleration above 5k. I'm not too concerned if it is a clutch slip - but I'm worried something may be wrong internally.

    any thoughts.

    Did you replace the clutch springs? My 78E did the same thing and seems to be cured with new springs.

      I did not replace the clutch springs - it did sit dry for about a month. I don't think that would cause any problems though.

      Your's was also only slipping in 3rd gear?

        same problem...

        My clutch started out the same way... slipping in third at around 4500-5000 rpms... I let it be... and eventually this happened in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th...

        I replaced:

        Friction plates, Clutch Plates (types 1 and 2), Clutch Bearing, and Springs... also, of course, the lockwasher and gasket... and then adjusted as needed... this took me about 3.5 hours start to finish, and I'm just a hack with mechanics... y'know... dive in fearlessly, hope that I do it right...

        I figured that while I was in there I would replace the Clutch Plates and Bearing, although I probably didn't need to... you can most likely fix your problems by replacing the Friction plates...

        All of these parts are still available from YAMAHA dealers, though some backordered on me... I got them all in about 2-3 weeks of ordering.

        First thing, though... that I recommend is a clutch adjustment... you never know.

        Anyway.... my baby goes like a raped ape now.

          Sam- I can't say for sure - but i'm guessing that the adjustment will help me out. I had that all apart when I was cleaning probably didn't get it set back exactly where it was.

          Thanks for the input guys - will post back when/if I find anything tonight.

            I think it was slipping in 3rd only, above 4500 rpm. Thats about where the most power comes on. Would stop slipping about 7000 rpm. If the clutch discs dried out you may need to soak in oil, dry disc may slip, according to a friend of mine.

              CLUTCH OUT OF ADJUSTMENT!

              that was a pleasently easy fix for a change.

              I notice a big difference now just when I shift gears.
