  • Blazer brand stop and tail light...WTF

has anyone ever wired one of these up? i am working on a rat bike side mount and purchased what was marked as a stop and tail light. Upon opening it i found it to have a dual filament bulb. However it only has a red and a black wire coming out the back. I figured it to be a self grounding light. When i placed the ground to the light frame and a hot to the red wire i got nothing. with the hot to the red wire and the ground lead to the black wire i have a marker light only. Does anyone know how the H*%l to wire this up for dual use??

open up the socket (if you can) and see what's connected where. if it's a dual filament bulb & socket, it should have two contacts at the base of the socket that correspond to the two contacts on the base of the bulb. it may be that it's missing a wire or something, post a picture of the bulb socket so we can get a better look at it. have a nice day and ride safe

If it's a dual filament bulb, and only 2 wires (ground and hot) you need to contact the vender because you got a bad part. For a stop/running light you should have 2 hots and a ground. The ground works for both the bright filament and the dim filament. One hot wire for each filament.

If there's two contacts inside the socket and this is a bayonet type socket, it's a dual element and should work, although you may have to screw with the alignment of the contacts as those cheap lights aren't the best. The metal socket housing is the ground (it IS metal, right?). I'll also note that dual element and single element bayonet sockets are different and the lamps won't interchange, so I doubt if that's the problem.

The 'color code' probably means nothing, as I've seen all sorts of combos on these. I bought a 'matched' pair of custom import lights, and one had black/red, the other black/green; and neither black was a ground.

Did you make sure the lamp is good? On my imports one of the 'taillight' filaments only lasted about 10 minutes with the bike running....

              success

Thanks to al who offered help. The light is now complete. Stupid foreign wiring and color diagrams. I think the light sits out to far from the shock mount and am not thrilled with the horizontal mounting...however.. it is mounted and working which is enough to get me around the block. I was also able to keep the rear fender relatively clean and used a small marker light on it instead of the bulkey full mount.

Now its time to fab another brracket with the light sitting closer.
