What gauge wire for new wiring harness?

What gauge wire should I get from West Marine, for the new wiring harness. I know what kind to get and how many colors I need...but what gauge should I get. I was thinking 12, but someone told me 10 gauge, and I thought that might be too big!

I don't think you'll need anything larger than 14 but a lot of the smaller wires are 18 and 20 gauge.
