The operation was a success! Coils went in easy, new wires and plugs went in easy, and then she fired right up.
I discovered that is IS possible to use the stock mounting holes, at least it was on my bike. I made absolutely no modifications to the mounts or the coils. The towers are pointing out to either side of the bike with no clearance issues around the frame. The rubber boots almost hit the round gas tank mounts, but I was able to route the wires back into the frame without them being in danger of smashing or pinching.
I meant to take some pics, but I guess I got a little excited about putting everything back together and I completely forgot. If there is enough interest I suppose I could take 10 minutes to pull the tank and take some shots.
