  • DIY Tire Changing

    Hi Everyone,

I'm interested changing my own tires on
my XJ. I think I've decided on a home-
made system that uses an old 14" car
rim with a 5/8" threaded bar up through the center to hold the wheel in place.
Aong with a bead breaker and some
tire irons, it looks like it'll work.

My question is, what about the rear
wheel? With the shaft drive is there a
"hole" through the center of the wheel
when removed? I've never taken the
rear off and wondered if it would work
    with my contraption.

    Thanks,

    Dave

Yes Dave, the rear does indeed have an axle!!!

Have you checked out this article in the Maintenance forum?

bike on centerstand, remove cotter pin and axle nut from lh side; loosen the axle pinch bolt rh side; support the caliper and pull out the axle; pull out the rear brake torque stopper plate, move wheel to right to separate it from final gear case, voila.

      Thanks Mike,

I hadn't found that yet. Just what I needed.

I have never held a wheel down with a bolt as you suggest when changing a tire. I usually sit it on top of a bucket and have at 'er with the irons. On occasion I have had to set everything up in a vice to break the bead, but all in all it is an easy task with good irons. go for it.

This sounds like a good setup. Post some pix when you're all done with it.
