  • Vetter Trunk electrical plug picture?

I just got a Vetter trunk this last weekend, and I would really like to get it operational with a minimum of modifications. The electrical plug has been removed, and the wires are just run through the original hole. Since I am looking to set it up as a quick-release mount, I want to create my own socket/pigtail, but I don't have a clue what kind of plug I am looking for. So far, I have learned that no one seems to sell the actual original plugs, but if I can see what the original ones looked like, maybe I could come up with something.

Does anyone have a Vetter trunk with the original electrical plug and pigtail? If you do, can you post a few pictures of the plugs?

    Hey Bug,
The Vetter plugs are ALL "Molex" round pin type. You can get them at Radio Shack, with new pins! I believe the box used the 4 pin plug. Ground, tail, and brake is all you need, so one pin isn't used. The 4 pin is a square plug, and the three pin is a longer rectangular plug. I think the pins are .065", but I could be wrong. I DO know the Radio Shack parts work on the fairing plug.

I used individual bullet type plugs for each wire.

Yeah, but I want to make it like it was designed to be. With a plug on the box, and a removable pigtail connected to the bike wiring.

That's great and all, but I don't trust the guys at the local Radio Shack to know what I'm talking about with anything but an actual part number. I looked at the Molex website and found their 3-pin, panel-mount plugs, but none of them look ike they'll fit into the notched rectangular slot in the trunk:

Any idea as to which connector I would need?

          Hey CBug,

I believe I have that same Vetter trunk on mine. I'll try to get some pics for ya.

Have you tried Craig Vetters website yet? I heard he still has one, but haven't tried it yet.

I understand how you feel about trying to get the right connector.

I just got my truck out of the transmission shop this evening... so now I'm mobile again. (Only $1500 later... )

I'll get back w/ ya as soon as I can.

            CBug...

Just checked Craig Vetters' website... they still have the connectors for the fairings, but I can't find the ones your looking for...
But they do provide a way to contact them.

This link takes you to the page w/ the fairing 9 pin connectors:
            http://www.craigvetter.com/pages/Onl...ls.html#anchor

They've got cool emblems, decals, and accessories!

I have just sent an email to Carol Vetter requesting info and a possible volume deal for any member interested.

I'll let ya know as soon as I hear back.

Yep. I've read just about everything on his site. He offers tons of repair parts for Vetter stuff, including the electrical connectors for the Fairings, but not the one for the trunks. I actually just placed an order from him today for a set of Bunkees (the rubber isolators) for under my new trunk.

I just added up the cost of what all I'd like to order to get mine all decked out properly... over $200! Kinda proud of their stuff, too! I'll have to save my change a while before I can place an order...
(especially after the change I just dropped in my truck...)

No kidding! I do that whenever I look at any of the parts lists available across the web. I figure Vetter's prices are a little high, because he's supporting a limited market of vintage bikes and riders, and he's doing it all by himself. However, at least it's not like Hardley parts that cost tripple what they're worth...

                    Bug,
That IS a three plug Molex. Radio Shack WILL have it. Just take the box in, and the plugs should be a drawer near the rest of the real electrical stuff.

So, is this the one I'm looking for?

The dimentions on this one say it's only .59" at it's widest point. The slot is a full inch wide. I can't see how that will fit...

That one will work. There MAY be one available from other places that will work a little better. I'll be riding "over the hill" Thursday, and I can go to a place I know that has a LOT of old stuff. I'll see if they have a few of them there, and PM you if they do. If you can find one sooner, go for it. As I said, I have a box as well, so I can still use one myself.

I went to Radio Shack, and they only had 2 or 4 pin connectors. I bought the 4-pin ones, along with some stranded wire in a kit with 3 colors. The connectors are the right height, but they are just a tad too thick to fit through the slot at the ends. I think I am just going to dremel out the notch, to make it a perfect rectangle. That should make it so the new connector slides in perfectly. My only concern is the fact that these connectors don't have any kind of positive lock on them, like the fairing ones do. Should I be worried about them falling out??

                            CBug,
Craig Vetter got back w/ me today. He has no access to the trunk plugs, and said it took them a while to come up with a vender for the fairing connectors. He also said that if we find a source for the plugs, to let HIM know, so he could sell them, too!

He said they're looking, but haven't had luck yet.

I asked him if they no longer had the original vender list, if the vender had gone out of business, or whether someone like 3M could replicate them cheap enough if given the specs... haven't heard back on that one yet.

I told him some of us here are "purists" by nature, (self included), and dedicated to the restoration of these old bikes, and that we liked to keep things as "right" as we can.

Nice guy though, and responded back quickly... twice!

Told him my "wish" list, but that I'd have to save up...

Sounds like Ray's got you on track w/ a substitute, though.

Let ya know more if I hear anything else.
