  • Wrong Clutch Springs

So I ordered clutch springs from JCWhitney and they are about 3/8" shorter than my original ones (almost 2 coils shorter). I spoke with someone and thats the only springs they offer... Anyone order springs from them and discover the same problem? I guess I should just order my springs from PNM... Any thoughts?

    the mysterious lockness washer

Well I figured that I would use my old springs until I get new ones, or if it acts good might just keep them in there... Well upon reassembly I noticed there were lock washers (6 in all) either between the lobe of the star plate and spring or at the other end between the spring and the basket... Wasnt sure what end of the spring they belong at or even if their supose to be there! Bike bandit didnt list a washer at either end of the spring in the schematic... Any thoughts? Thanks.

I've read posts where people put a washer behind the spring to strenghten the springs. If I recall correctly, one post specified .040" thick washers. Makes the cluch act like new awhile longer. As to JCW, they don't know there asses from a hole in the ground and I'll never buy anything from them again. Was a big fiasco with my progressive suspension for the rear.

I'd measure the plates to make sure they are in spec, and order the proper springs from PNM

What kind of washers, just plain o'l flat ones right? Its weird that they would use lock washers... Im just goin to leave them out and see how it is...

Already got the friction plates from PNM, shoulda got the springs as well! I will never buy from JCW anymore. Thanks.

            Hi Marshy,
As Silent said, its a mod to tighten up the springs, Ive used this method
before and have also added an xtra steel, not at the same time tho.
The added washes which sit behind the springs has a heavier affect
on the lever compared to the xtra steel.
Id put the washers back in, youll find that if they were in there, they
would have compressed the springs some, so theyd be out of spec.

              Hey Marshy,

It may be too late, but you might do better to find some flat washers, and put them down in the basket under the springs, not on top next to the star plate.

Also, would highly suggest getting your springs from MikesXS.net see my recent Lapse of Reason thread, we put them into Bigge_Al's XJ, and they measured almost 2mm longer than spec! Made the clutch lever a little tight, but the 650 uses the same Yamaha Part # as the XS11 for the springs, and they are strong!! You'll get charged about $7.00 for "quick" shipping ground UPS, but thats the same or similar to PNM!

Thanks TC, I put it back together for now without any washers but will deffinetely order those springs from Mike's at a later date. I need a reason to take off that case cover and polish it up anyways.

On mine, I machined some spacers. They measured .200 (yes, thats 5x the .04) and they worked fine. Using flat washers may be tricky, because the springs fit into a counterbore that is the same diameter as the outside of the spring. Basically, your washers cant be any bigger than the spring. also, if the inside is too small, it may hang up on the post that goes through the spring.

                  Good luck with your pursuit
