  • rear axle install

Rear wheel going back on and the axle doesn't want to align with/go through the swing arm, even without the wheel on. Never been a problem before. Likely something simple I'm sure, but I can't get it through. Ideas?

Are you using the "cable" to keep the swing arm up? If not, do you have clearance for a strait shot with the mufflers? Are both shocks fully installed, or do you just have one on? These are what could give you problems. The swing arms are not as stiff as the newer bikes, so if everything isn't correct, you CAN have the right side and left side off a little bit. The other thing to remember is the axle has a shoulder on it, and likes to "hang up" rather than go right in. I find I need to play with the tire as I'm installing the rear axle, moving it up and down to take the pressure off the axle.

Ray, I've been nudging away on the tire, but it's not lining up. Disconnected the right shock to no avail. It just doesn't want to get by the shoulder you mention. No cable necessary - 80 Special...

IF you can get a helper, try lifting the tire slightly as he pushes on the axle. With no helper, I use my feet to lift the tire, one foot in front, one in back and lift. The HARD part is getting the last bit, the part that goes into the pinch bolt, to get started. That has always been one of the harder parts. I didn't ask, but it IS on the center stand, correct?

          Hey Dean,

I had the same problem with Bigge_AL's XJ when I pulled the tire and final drive to clean/grease it. Took a bit of effort to push down on the swingarm/spring(bike was still upside down) to get it to allow the axle to go into the pinch bolt section, a little "nudging" with a small hammer also helped!

I got it guys, and I'm not gonna say what I was doing wrong, but I bet you can guess !! Let's just say it went in "differently" than my Honda that I did yesterday, and the solution just registered in my brain.
