  • xj seat: pain in the

    dunno if it's just me

but removing and especially putting the seat of my xj in place is just as hard as playing with the carbs

these little levers don't stand a surviving chance, and the seat hooks never fit, it's always a rod and a hammer to get them back in place

I unbent them, lubed the locks, dropped them carefully into position and even played them music but I lose a 1/2 h each time

this and the battery screws on the terminals are worth honda design

    Never had a problem

I have never had a problem taking off or putting back on my XJ's seat.

Have 2 seats for the XJ, stock and a Diamond unit, have not had problems getting either seat on and off.

Check the front of the seat. There is a 'lip' that is supposed to slip under the rear edge of the tank. Sounds like this 'lip' is bunged up or is being prevented from seating properly. Generally all you need to do is slip the front of the seat pan under the tank, then drop the seat 'forks' into the sockets on each side of the frame. Press down gently on the seat until you hear the 'click' that indicates each fork has been locked in place by the release mechanisms.

        mine is out of shape

above that lip is the cushion that is so flat it pushes the seat away from the tank, hence always off, and a pain to counteract

I thought it would happen to more people

but those vertical screws to connect the battery seem like a design flaw to me

IIRC, most replacement batteries give you the option of vertical or horizontal mounting of the screws. The top of the battery generally has a square fitting with holes in the top and on one side. The square nut that comes with the battery screws will fit in so the screws can be put in through either hole.

Having said that, the vertical screw mount makes the most sense for the XJ as it is easiest to remove the battery by first sliding the battery out an inch or so, removing the ground cable, slide the battery out another inch or 2, then undo the positive cable. Would be almost impossible to attach the cables the other way unless you attach the cables to the battery first then to the frame (ground) and solenoid (positive) posts. The XJ positive cable is actually a "Y" of 2 cables and is a little harder to work with than just a single cable.

            Wow...

Just goes to show you can't judge a thread by it's title...

At first I thought this was going to be the typical

"XJ seat hurts my backside" bashing thread... never imagined it was because

            of reinstalling it!

            Who knew?

well it is still a pain

it's not the cushion but that underlip blocking, I can't really see...

              will check again

as for the design of battery poles, I would have preferred top screws but I ain't jesus nor mechanic
