  • 78E before and after

Some of you may remember the thread I created " To paint or not to paint". Well I decided to paint amongst other things. Here is my 78E before and after. I have spent the last week putting her back together. Notice I have replaced the exhaust with a Hooker exhaust I bought off of Ebay. There was some questions as to whether or not they would fit a Standard. With a little modification, I was able to install them. I am trying to find a good backround to take some pics and hopefully get in the caledar. Ya'll tell me what you think?

      Hi, Foreda...
Looks good. So ya got the Hooker pipes on your standard! Shows what those guys at Hooker knew... way to go!

      Got a couple of questions...

      1) What did you have to modify to get it to fit your standard?

      2) And to me it looks like you'll have to drop the pipes to change the oil filter when I look at the pic... is that true, or is it just the way it looks in the pic?

Bikes coming together nicely for ya! Ride Safe!

        Hooker

I drilled the bracket about 1 1/2 in. forward of the standard exhaust mount. As far as dropping the pipes to change the filter, I believe there is sufficient room to remove the filter. I'll let you know when I change the oil again to be sure. While I was doing all of this work, I also replaced the clutch with the Esrah kit and new springs. I took her out for a spin to adjust clutch and she feels real strong.

Cool... and I really like the straight, smooth lines Hooker laid out... and the way it mounts low like that. Nice bends. I'm really interested also to see how you find the power band to be with it. I'm curious if it'll be stronger on the bottom and a little weaker on the top, or if you'll need to rejet / readjust the carbs any. Keep me posted.
I think I've got my exhaust delimas figured out as well... I'll know tomorrow.

            Power

I got on her pretty hard and she runs like the devil with no hesitation. I am going to go ahead and resync carbs and stick the colortune to see if anything has changed. From what I've seen so far, I don't think I will need to re-jet.

I actually liked the original color, with the pinstriping better... It just looked a bit more professionally done IMO. The pipes are pretty though.

Move it back about three feet, and a bit closer to the wall, and you'll have a pretty good 'non-distracting' background.

I disagree with bug and rowdy.I think she's looks perfect.I like the smooth lines without the gold pin stripes. The pipes look great as well,I would defiantly place this one in the sweet ride category! Terry

Nice ride man, I dig the color. Personally I like the pin stripes, kinda like a snug dress on a beautiful woman, you get to see all her curves. Thin black pins would look saweeeaat. If it runs as good as it looks (no duh right) you must be king of the block with that thing!

It was a hard decision not to put the pin stripes. I and SWMBO (mostly her) thought it might look too busy with the stripes. I respect you're opinion and thanks for replying! As far as king of the block, to my knowledge, there are very few 11's in my part of the country. She does run as good as she looks!!

Sweet ride. The paint color is awesome. I never was a big fan of the pinstripes on the standards. I think it looks way better without them. The Hookers look excellent as well. I say the ebay listing and considered bidding on them even though I don't have my XS yet (working on a deal to possibly pick one up this weekend). How many NOS Hookers do you find anywhere that look that good? Not many, I'm sure.
79 XS1100 SF - name TBD - possibly "Divorce Maker" Kerker 4 into 1, K&N filter in stock air box
79 XS1100 SF - parts (for now) - "Divorce Maker II"
79 XS1100 SF "The one that got away" sold in 1993.
