It shoudn't keep your bike from starting, but that drum part should have a flim of oil on it to keep it from binding when it moves through it's stroke. It doesn't need much just a film, to keep it moving and from wearing out.

Got the fuel lines disconnected from the carbs to check flow out of the tank. As I suspected, it's abysmally slow. I'm going to untangle my fuel routing tomorrow to eliminate the possibility of kinks, and go from there.

I think I figured out the problem. After untangling the lines and sending fuel through them, they seemed to work when stretched out straight- most of the time. It was nowhere near reliable, and combining that fact with the likelihood of kinks in my previous setup, I'm pretty sure there would be no way I could get that setup to work.

Looking closer, I got quite the "duh" moment. Those small clear sections right in front of the carbs turned out to be fuel filters installed by the previous owner. This, of course, rendered my extra four feet of fuel lines and filters unnecessary.

I went back to the original setup, sort lines routed in a way previously mentioned- left petcock to the right two carbs, right petcock to left carbs. With that, the fuel seemed to flow nicely, and I shortly had the bike up and running.

I'm going to keep an eye on it, though- too many times I thought I had the problem solved, then a few hours later it acts up again. Also, the left petcock wasn't too reliable in my bench tests, so I'm going to keep an eye on it. It would be nice to actually get this beast on the road, though....

I was having the same problem. The wierd part was, I could drive the bike for 500kms or several days before it would act up.

I kept the filters (MikesXS) but had to just keep trimming the fuel lines until they were short enough that they didn't kink.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Well, this doesn't have much to do with the issue at hand, but I'd just like to say that, for the first time, I was actually able to RIDE my XS instead of just working on it! Sure, it was only about 10 mph around the yard, but it was a ride, nonetheless.

It's not perfect- there's still a bit of a low RPM (2K-3K) stumble that comes and goes, but I have yet to do a proper idle mixture screw adjustment/tuning and carb sync, so that might be the problem there.

I'm just excited that, after three months of work, I was actually able to ride the thing! Thanks, everybody, for the help.
