  • starter no turn

Hello, I have a 78 1100 E that I aquired from Keith the Seattle giant.

    The starter doesnt spin and I'm confused. Steps thus far;

Replaced battery ground strap w/ something more groundier
Replaced starter w/ one perported to be good. Seems unlikely both are bad?

Tried different relay. Old junk one, but with same results. Put prettier one back on

Test light shows power at relay hot and on the red-white and blue-white on the relay when key on

Pushing the start botton doesnt not show power on the big black going to starter. Hear a click at the relay.

Direct jumping off of the big red hot and the starter cable doesnt make starter spin.

Is there some wierd fuse or ground that I need to check? I think Im missing something simple...

I love the bike, its a great ride, but what pain to work on or get parts for.

Well, there is a fuse related to that circuit. Have you checked all the fuses?

Make sure your battery is fully charged first. It should be at least 12.5 volts. Check it with a meter.

You can test your starter(s) with a set of jumper cables. Starter off the bike, hook your cables up to your car battery. Then hook the black to the case of the starter and touch the red to the cable terminal. If it's good it should spin.

        Hi Jeff,
shove a screwdriver or anything else that's metal across the two big threaded starter solenoid terminals.
If the starter cranks it's the starter circuit that's fried.
If the starter whirs but don't engage the battery is weak.
If nothing happens the battery is flat or the starter cables are not connected properly or the solenoid is fried.

I don't know if this is the one you talked of changing, but it does sound like a grounding problem to me. There is a grounding strap that goes from the back side of your middle drive to the frame. It uses one of the screws that attaches your middle drive to the motor. These corrode up sometimes and need cleaned.

              All fixed

It was a combo of a weak battery and a poor engine ground strap.
