  • The quest for better brakes and other pains in the butt

I've been trying get my R1 caliper conversion installed and this project is fighting me at every step.

At first I couldn't find the right caliper bolts, so I mail ordered a set.

Next the company in Australia that machined the kit cut the inside diameter of the disk spacers too small. I haven't solved this problem but I'll have to find someplace to get them machined out.

I put it back together and at least I can ride it with the stock calipers but at least I put in the new stainless disk bolts...

I'm glad I decided to trial fit the R1 calipers because it seems the speedo cable is too short to go around the caliper. Anybody know if the special speedo cable is longer than the one on the standard? I think I'm going to need one at least 3" longer. Any help on this one would be appreciated. I'd like to have this figured out by the time I can get the spacers reworked.

    Hey Tony,

I don't know what year/model your bike is, but according to the FICHE for the 79 Standard cable, vs. the 79SF cable, the fitting that goes to the wheel/drive unit is shaped differently??

I believe folks have stated that RicePaddy provides extra length cables, or can custom make them!

Mikes xs has speedo cable extenders in 6 8 and 10 inch lengths. I ordered one for mine because I put an after market speedo and my cable wasnt long enough.

That will do the trick. You wouldn't happen to know if the 650 speedo cable is the same as the one for out beloved XS11s?

          Hi Tony,
the XS650 speedo cable has the same end fittings as an XS1100 Standard cable.
I suspect it may be a couple of inches shorter but a 6" or 8" extender will more than compensate.

I know that the xs1100 has 2 types of cables. one screws in at the wheel sensor and the other slides in and is held in place with a bolt. the end that goes to the speedo is the same. the extender on mikes xs will fit the 1100 cables.

Thanx, I just ordered it with a 10" extender so that it will be sure and go around the R1 caliper.

Now to get the disk spacers machined out...
