  • Interchangeable Friction Plates?

    Hi Guys,
So I’m looking at buying some friction plates and springs (reusing the steels) for my bike and I’m not sure where I should order my parts from. I want to order the EBC springs and plates from bikebandit.com but they only offer friction plates for a XS650 and XS750… I referenced the Barnett sight and they show the XS650 using 7 plates for years '75-'79 and 6 for '80+…the XS750 uses 7. Problem is, bikebandit.com only shows available plates for the 650 and 750 for a ’79… Don’t I need 8 friction plates?
I know I could get them a little cheaper on partsnmore.com but I always believe in you get what you pay for, so EBC’s are my happy medium between doing this cheep and breaking the bank…. Thoughts on this topic? Thanks.

There are 8 friction plates (part # 341-16321-13-00) in all of the XS1100's. It looks to me, based on the fact that that same part number also fits other Yamaha clutches from 1973-2007, it's probably interchangeable between all the XS's. The list I linked to doesn't list the XS1100's as a possible match, so it may be that they just don't cross-reference the part completely. However, the fact that it goes for so many other yamaha engines tells me it's probably a standard part that has been used for decades in all Yamaha engines.

It's only the number of plates differing between the 750 and 1100 clutch. OEM disks are ordered by the number of them you want rather than in sets. Or at least it was that way in 1988 when I last worked at a Yamaha dealer.

I dont want OEM, I want EBC. What kills me is the XS750 set is $65 and the XS650 set is $80... IDK

Do the EBC ones only come as a set? Usually, you buy them individually. Any particular reason for not using OEM ones? They seem to work fine for everyone else...

I've never noticed that EBC plates are any better or worse than stock. Some people are getting good results from the cheap plates from Parts N More but I haven't tried them. I'd like to get some heavy duty springs but the last time I tried Barnett springs they made my left hand ache from force of pulling the lever... Maybe alternating a Barnett and stock springs in every other hole would work.

                9 Plates w/ extra steel

                Alto plates 2.5mm stock 3.0mm.

One extra steel, one extra friction plate, much better setup.

                Stock springs give stock feel.

They will probably last longer than you will own the bike and hook-up allot better under full power loads.

If I can't burn them up you won't either.

                PM me for details.

Jeff, Alto friction plates with stock steel plates? Or you mean Alto friction and steel plates? Sounds like a legit way to get a bullet proof clutch!

                    Alto plates

9 alto frictions 1 extra stock steel plate.

                    Same stack thickness.

Better material, works well with full synthetic oil if needed.

Over the years many have reported that sock OEM friction plates with Barnett springs is a good set-up. Reliable with no slippage under some pretty heavy use, including bikes with Wiseco big-bore kits installed.

                        Heavy springs

Heavy springs make for heavy feel at the lever. Most find it uncomfortable in city driving.

Some of the so called heavy springs sold when fully compressed in the basket achieve coil bind and do not allow for complete disengagement causing clutch to drag when the lever is in and making it very hard to find neutral and slamming the gears when engaging from neutral.

More friction area and stock springs give the best of both worlds, better hookup and great feel.

I make 211 BHP at the rear wheel uncorrected. My clutch doesn't slip. My clutch feels stock.

What more could you possibly be looking for in a clutch.

                            Source

I am the source for alto plates.

Alto does not sell to the public.

                            I have a wholesale account.

                              K. You can hook me up with these plates. Tell me more, prices, shipping to Canada etc. I have two that need a new clutch now so I am very interested in knowing more. Is there a website or something to look at?
