  • XS 1100 Side covers

Does any one know if there are any side covers from other years or models (850, 750, 650) that will fit my 1979 1100 XS Special? I am missing the left one. Are there any aftermarket ones available?

The 79 Special side covers are different from the 78-79 Standard, AND the 80-81 Special side covers are different from the 79 Special. There are NO other interchanges.
        Sorry.

Ya know, a clever man with a hack saw and a welder could actually find an old 80-81 Special in a salvage yard, and possibly cut the side cover mounting tabs from the frame, and transplant them onto the 79 frame, and then be able to use 80-81Special side covers.

Rapid prototyping is the way to go. I have the expertise but not the money. A lot of people talk about making a mold but don't know the first thing about it. I have been there (worked in a prototype shop for 5+ years). It would be a good enterprise but would need pots, ovens, shakers and numerous other equipment and an inventory of supplies. I plan on starting some prototyping of emblems and badges. The carb holders and covers take considerable more equipment and room (you can't do them in the corner of your garage). I have some supplies but am a long ways from where I need to be. Also, to make molds you must have a good piece to start with. You could make a cover that would withstand much more heat and abuse with the materials available today.

                    Hey Big John,

One of the problems with the earlier model covers was in their mounting tabs, being straight slots, the rubber grommets that fit over the metal tangs often dry rotted and such, and then they just sorta hang there, and riders don't realize it, and next thing they know, after a 100mph blast, they stop and see that their's has blown off into the great wide open!

With the left side, often they try to pry the thing open not realizing that you need to use the KEY slot and break off the locking tab.

The 80-81's used a round hole and hanging tab, and they are more secure. My right hand side one lost half of it's U shaped slot that locks the left top side of it, and it's never blown off even though it's come loose, the right round upper hanger hole and press lock knob on the bottom have kept it safe and in place.

I'm not terribly worried about keeping looking exactly stock, and so I won't have much trouble fabricating something out of some plate material IF I ever break/loose mine beyond repair.

But if someone came up with a way to make replica replacements for a fair price, they could probably make a decent profit with them!

                      TC,
Unless you actually melt them (don't ask) they can almost always be repaired. You can even build a new tab that has been broke and lost. A trick I learned when prototyping was to use baking soda and thin super glue. It bonds very well to the base plastic. Do this in a well ventalated area as the fumes build quickly. A plastic bottle with a small tube helps with the baking soda. This can be sanded smooth and takes paint good.

That reminded me. Yeah old sucks. Anyway there is a bonding agent called E6000 that is unreal. It might even stick to water. Allright maybe not water but the stuff is elastic and it's adhesion powers are terrific. It could fix those grommets. I used it on mine and it worked great! It comes in clear and gloss black. I found it at Ace hardware stores.

                          Grommets

I just replaced all the side cover grommets. Bought them from Bike Bandit. FYI

                            hmm, yes.... i like it.

                            hmm, how simple, Thanks TopCat!!

make/swap new mounts onto XS, using different sidecovers..

Hmm, i know where a parts cx500 is sitting with 2 sets of side covers.
i'll see how bad those would look.

otherwise, i'll just have to break down and spend money on different ones from XJ or whatever.

i must be getting brain dead as i age....

                            Thanks again!
PS: no i won't leave the stickers that say cx500 on the side covers.

Came across this site in Australia. Side covers are about $72 US less shipping. If you want it bad enough.
