How far should the airscrews be turned out. I have them at 2.5 turns out right now accross the board. I am going to take it to a local shop for some fine tuning, they have the YICS tool and (because I do not have the time). Additionally it does not like to start and run on all 4 cylinders, 1 and 4 will not fire until it warms up a bit (30 seconds) and the choke is almost off. I checked the spark with a timing light and all 4 are firing, but runs rough and will not idle properly (1150 rpm) until it's good and warm. Carb holders are new and air box boots are all in great shape (Stock air filter and box) I am not sure if I have it to lean, but I would think it should run on all 4 when cold and choked. Once it is warm it runs great and idles perfect. Very strange!!

    Chris,

Hate to say it, but how well did you clean the carbs?? Sounds like the pilot circuit is partially clogged still? Secondly, did you know that there is a small jet for the choke/enrichener down inside the float bowl itself, and clogs easily, need to be sure you can spray carb cleaner down the tunnel of the bowl and see it spray out thru the jet inside the bowl. May need to take a soft copper wire to probe the jet to dislodge gum/varnish while cleaning.

The pilot screws are fuel/air mix screws not AIR screws, more turns out is richer. As the engine warms up, it can run on leaner mixtures, but ofc needs richer when cold. Could be a combo of clogged choke bowl jet, as well as partially clogged pilot jet circuit causing the poor cold start/running problems!? The YICS also allows vacuum and fuel air mix to be shared within the head from other carbs, so that's why it can be hard to tune it without first blocking it off. IT's been said that when you get to 3 or more turns out of the pilot screw that it's time to go up a size on the pilot jet. HOWEVER, if the circuit is patially clogged, you're not getting true response from the tuning process/screw adjustments!

I think you will find all XJ's need to be around 4 turns or better out. Mine is cleaned and synced and around 4.5.
I believe it was Jerry that brought this up some time back about the difference between XS and XJ and turns out required.
Mine won't hardly run at 2 turns out. Where it's at now is great with no problems starting cold or hot.

        4 Turns

        Cruiser-

4 turns out seems to be the magic number on the XJ's. I adjusted them this evening and it was a night and day difference. Started on all 4 cold and only needed choke for a short time 30-40 seconds. Throttle response was vastly improved as well. Thanks....

TopCat- I learned my lesson the 3rd time I tried to clean the carbs. Everything was soaked in carb cleaner and a short piece of welding wire was used as a probe. I also found that Q-Tips with some of the cotton removed seem to work well for the passages. I would dip them in carb cleaner and swab all the passages. Soaking them in carb. dip got them 90% clean swabbing them with carb cleaner soaked Q-tips showed me that they were not completly clean and the extra time and effort with the Q-tips made all the difference.

Hopefully you did not soak the butterfly valve seals in carb cleaner

The cleaner will do bad things to those seals and they can leak afterwards. They are a PITA at best to replace in my opinion and I have only read how to do it.

No I did not. I know better than that. I guess I should have not said that I soaked them, I just doused them in carb. spray and blew them out with air. Then I used a steam cleaner (like a Shark) with a 50/50 mixture of distilled water and vinegar to blow out all the passages and then used a Q-Tip with carb. cleaner to swab them squeaky clean. Q-Tips work great for the emulsion tubes.

                2nd Gear problem

I have read through the fix for this and I do not think I could do this I have very little mech experience. I live in NC was wondering if anyone was near me that would be willing to help me.

                  Hey Bigge Al,

North Carolina is a rather big/wide state, might help if you included what CITY you were in to help narrow down things!

Also, I'm in lower east Va. just across the border for SOME folks in the north east corner of NC.

                    His Response:
I live south of Greensboro, the north central part of NC. I have been riding by skipping second gear when able.
Big Al, you replied to the Email NOTIFICATION that you received when you subscribed to this thread. It went to the ADMIN's email, it does NOT return to this thread. You have to visit the site and REPLY here for it to show up on the FORUM.

The Wiz is now in NC, but he's way over in the Asheville area. I believe Ralph Meeks might be closer. There may be others, you might be able to see who by looking at the Member's Lounge, see the STICKY thread for how to search for the Member Locator threads.

IF you don't get any responses, I've got a garage, tools, and free weekends...NO KIDS , and have done this repair several times for several member's. It would probably take you a weekend, ride up here on Friday, then we work on it Saturday, possibly Sunday AM, but would expect to be able to get it done Saturday PM, and then you ride home Sunday!

You provide the OIL/Filter, Gasket Material, Yamabond Sealant. Might need to also provide middle/final gear oil since I flip the bike to work on it. We would prep it Friday Night getting it flipped.
