fuel tank change over

my first post here and wondering if an 1978 xs11 fuel tank would work on a 1980 model xs11 ? Would petcock interchange ?
Looking at a 40,000 some miles bike and one thing is it has a deep dent on its fuel tank it has now .

Not certain, but pretty sure if they are both Standards that they will interchange petcocks and all. The Special tank and the Standard tank are not plug and play interchangable, but it has been done for sure.

Leroy - Welcome to the premier site on the web for XS/XJ's. Don't correct - if they're both standard tanks, or both special tanks they'll swap. Going from one to the other will require modification. Just a note on the dent in your tank - Pop's-a-Dent works pretty good on that kind of thing. Won't make it perfect, but it'll reduce the amount of filler needed if you paint. JAT

all years of tanks swap from Standard to Standard and from Special to Special, petcocks included. Standard to Special & vice versa tank swaps can be done but takes some modifications. Standard & Special petcocks do NOT swap as they have different size attachment bases.
Do you already have the '78 tank? If so it costs nothing to do the swap.
If you have to go buy one make certain sure it is in good shape before you put your money down. No rust and no deep bondo-filled dents. How bad is the dent in the '80's tank? You can buy whole cansfull of bondo for a lot less than the cost of a rust & dent free used gas tank.
