Neutral switch in the 79's is for the light only, you can actually start the bike in gear if you want. Did you try more then once? Maybe the clutch was a bit stuck the first time and stalled it. Also, please turn your caps lock off1979 xs1100 Special -

As stated, in all except maybe the XJ, the nuetral switch just lights the light. It does nothing to prevent starting, and none except maybe the XJ have a kickstand switch so that should not be doing it.
Souns like maybe your bike got a case of the dampa$$ from the washdown. Maybe let it dry out and try again. If it runs fine then, probably moisture got into the ignition system and made your spark weak that it would not support load till it dried out. JATLife is what happens while your planning everything else!

wet wires
if you want to avoid this condition it the future, go thouth your wiring and use dieelectric grease on the high current wires and dieelectric spray on the low current wiring.
Be carful!! dieelectric grease can limit current flow on low current wiring!!!!
(screwed up a 97 chevy really bad with that)
dieelectric spray is "weak" enough to protect your low draw from water
give it a shot and you'll have a bit better luck playing in the water.1979 XS1100SF Special.78 E motor/carbs, Jardine 4-2 exhaust, XS Green coils, Corbin seat, S.S. Brake lines, Hard cases, Heated grips.

Hey BigTommy - posted this about a year ago...
Long story short - when a connector that carries the tci wires gets wet grounds through the neutral light wire and hoses the ignition circuits.
Most disconnect the neutral switch under the shifter, but here is a permanent fix.
