  • Progress, but another stall

so i got new plug caps, spark plugs, put gas in her and she starts up HOORAY!!
then i rev her high a few times and then let her idle. she was idling pretty good then she started to shoot flames out the 4-1 (no muffler on it yet) then i look at the carb and everytime it shoots a little flame. i see (what looks like exhaust) shoot out of carb #3 out of the elongated port that is on the top portion of the carb bell. then it dies and doenst want to start.

im wondering. there is a vacuum line that is on the left side (while sitting) that come out from the engine. i have that line going to the carb (there is a vacuum line on it so i hooked that up there) i dont have the octopus, im running the fuel straight the the carbs. could that vacuum line be the problem? is it supposed to be hooked up there?

so while reading around, it make me thing of another thing...the air mix screws...are they the ones that are in the bell there the filter attaches on? if so they are all the way in. maybe im running way too lean? i dont wanna go mess with the screws until i get some help lol. dont wanna do anything bad

That vacuum line, from manifold #2, goes to the octopus, or you block it off. It should not go to the carb.

The vacuum nipple on the #2 carb should be hooked to the hose going to the vacuum advance, under the left crank cover.

The fuel mixture screws are on the side of the carb toward the engine (top). The jets under the air filter snorkels should be tight.

The issue with #3 may be a vacuum leak, or the mixture screw is way out of adjustment. Carbs may also need cleaning, or your intake valve is not closing all the way.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Yep, you got it correct. That is your vacuum advance for the timing of the spark. It hooks to the vacuum nipple on the no 2 carb body.

If you had an Octy still on the bike, the nipple at the no 2 intake boot to the head that has that black cap on it would have a vacuum line running to the Octy.

You have no Octy, so with the bike off, petcocks turned on, do you get any fuel running out of the intake boots / airbox? Smell your oil and see if you have gas in it. Thinking you may have a stuck float or float valve that could be causing your richness.

i did forget to turn the fuel off a while ago, but no fuel had come out when i came back.

ill give the carbs a whack while its running lol...if that fails then i guess its time to take them off and take then apart...again

then again...maybe its teh choke being all the way out and the idle adjustment screw not in the right spot.
lol turned the choke off and adjusted the idle screw and seems to stay running...kinda...ill rev it high and it will drop to 2k fast then the decline from 2k -1k is pretty slow compared to the drop from 6k - 2k...but thats normal right?? maybe?? lol

Sorry no.When i blip my throttle it pretty much drops straight to idle. I have not been following all the post on this but if all else is good then sounds like a good sync is in order.

It should idle between 1000-1100 rpm.If it hangs then comes down your carbs are out of sync probably. Then it should come right back down to idle when you blip the throttle or even just ease off the throttle.
