  • "Trigger" Diode on 80SG?

I can't locate the diode that appears to be on a white wire somewhere between the alternator and the rectifier that triggers a relay to supply power to the headlight and instrument panel. I connected a spare power wire and accessory wire to get the headlight and tach and speedo lights to power up with the key.

But I'd like to find the diode and fix it. Is it behind the fusebox? I haven't looked there yet?

    Thanks

    Hi GNW,
that's the best-hidden part of the bike.
there is a diode inside a transparent plastic sleeve buried inside the wiring harness between the frame top tubes somewhere aft of the coils.
You have to cut the harness wrapping apart to find it.
And fer chrissake tape it up again afterwards. Mr Stupid didn't bother so a loose wire got trapped under a clamp and months later when all the insulation squeezed off the wire grounded out to cause me all manner of grief.

Wow! I would not have found that in a million years. I searched what I thought was a lot but didn't stumble across that one.

Don't feel too bad about not taping the harness Fred. While waiting for new carb boots I figured I may as well adjust the valves. While I've been real careful to clean up and improve everything I'm touching, somehow as I'm patting myself on the back for detailing the cam adjuster housing I must not have cleaned up the surface on the head and stuck it back on with permatex copper on the old messed up gasket! Needless to say I had a pretty good oil leak going. Promptly picked up some gasket paper and after a little work tonight stopped the leak.

I like the Mr. Stupid name but prefer to use the term BoneHead when describing my own foolishness!
