  • another jetting question

79 xs11 special. what are the stock size pilot and main jets? what are the stock carb size? type of mikuni etx? I am switching to pods soon. and would like to use unrestricted stock length 4-2. either by adding the sportster mufflers or just open end megaphones.

I know there is a chart somewhere. I can't reach my local xs guru. and when it comes to this I am above my head at the least. I have a guy at work who has access to mikuni jet kits that may fit but I don't know where to start on unsizing them.

I would def prefer it to run rich than lean. where would I start.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    OEM specs,

    BS34-II, 137.5 stock mains, 42.5 stock pilots.

Jetting guide says, total of 3 sizes up on mains which includes the -1 for dual changes for indy pods and free flowing pipes, also possibly 1 size up on pilots, but others have reported that the pilots seem FAT even with these mods?

Suggestion: 45 pilots, and 145 mains. YMMV!!

      Jetting

      Thanks. TC.

So i may be ok leaving the pilots? IIRC the pilots are the ones I would have to press out? Is that correct? Just want to try to get a setup that once done will give me a lean starting and running system.

Now if i could get a contact at work that could hook me up with some new Accell coils, plug wires, caps and plugs. mys life would be much easier.

      hahahahaha

Computer illiterate. what is YMMV?? lol

        Hey Gary!

Been wondering how it was coming along! Have not seen or heard anything from you in a bit.

YMMV = Your Motorcycle May Vary or Your Millage May Vary.

The pilot jet is accessed in the float bowl, on your early carbs it is underneath a screw and down in a "tunnel".

My 81 Carbs do not have the screw covering the pilot jet tunnel which you see is open in this fuzzy picture. You also can almost make out the mains which is the brass thing in the center.

It is a pretty small thing down in there. You want your screwdriver to be hand fitted to match the slot in it as the brass tends to strip pretty easy. Also, spray it down with PB Blaster good and let it soak for a half hour or more before you even try to pull the jet out. If your going to run pods, then changing the jets just got alot easier anyway. Takes maybe ten minutes to pull the carbs with pod filters.

The jet that is pressed in is the main air jet in the inlet bell of the carb. The pilot AIR jet is also in the inlet bell of the carb but it is threaded in. In this picture, the main jet is in the lower right IIRC, the pilot air jet is the lower left hole.

You should not need to change the air jets. possibly just the mains as TC suggested. Ohh, and your early model carbs do not have the upper right hole in the second picture, that is the carb bowl vent on the later model carbs, you have the upper Ts for vents.

          lost in space

Works been kicking my arse!!///lol Not to mention one issue after another with the bike makes me think I may never get it running or be able to afford it if I do. New tires, coils, plugs, wires, caps, and the rest of the exhisting issues kinda had me down (along with my driving situation).

But I am working little by little and getting more motivated again. rode an freinds BIG Dog again around the block and the bug bit me.

The pics are The Sshizzle.: cool: That will help me a bunch when I tear the carbs down AGAIN. and work on the rejetting.

Every day is a struggle of some kind Gary. Like any elephant, one bite at a time and when you look down again it is gone! Pics are easy to post. If you get stuck let me know, your close and I can always work in a trip to my mom's house with it for a pass from SWMBO.
