  • need help

    well i been sitting here reading all about the carbs on the xs11 and now i am getting a little wired about doing it my self so if there is any one here in Minnesota that has done it be for that i can talk to be for i do it that will be nice and where is the cheapest place that you all know of to get a good set of tires cause when i get this thing running i am going to smoke the tires off then get me a new set

    be for really should be "before" Just helping yah out.....

    Find a local shop for the tires and with the carbs..... I got tired of dealing with mine that I sent them off to a guy by the name of Wired George here in texas and cost me $381!!!

      that's why it all was comes up red i am missing a letter but i am not the best in grammar or in spelling but i can rebuild a chevy 5.7 blind folded with one hand behind my back

        Hi chevy,
        all the carb hi-tech strip, clean & rebuild stuff is in the list's tech sections but here's some basic tips.
        Find a cafeteria-sized metal tray to put the carbs in to work on them. The tray edges help keep those tiny little parts from going astray.
        Grind up a set of screwdrivers that are an EXACT fit in the slots of the various jets you are going to remove. The brass those jets are made of is as soft as sh1t and the slots go bad real easy.
        Think about replacing every single cross-point screw in the entire carb rack with an Allen head fastener.
        About getting the best price on tires:-
        The price you must consider is the total cost of getting new tires installed on your rims. Purchase + old tire removal + installation + balancing. If you can DIY the removal, installation & balancing, most likely the best tire price is on-line. OTOH, if you need to have the local shop do that work, you get happier people working on your wheels if you buy the tires there.

          i should put the tires a different way what is the best tire out there to use on something this big that will give me good traction and the best ride

            and if i do do the carbs do i even need to take out the jets or can i just spray them a lot with a lot of carb cleaner and hope i get it

              George is one of the Good Guys. He hates Keihin CVK carbs, tho! <G> I've got a KZ900 I may have him do the carbs for, if I don't do 'em myself.

                The carbs may seem a little overwhelming at first, but it is not hard, I have never earned money as a mechanic, but have always been able to figure most things out, I never have set the floats, havn't tried, cause my bike runs great, I took my carbs apart completely and soaked the jets and all parts, that didn't have rubber/gasket material, in carb cleaner, bench synch them, I soak them for 20mins each. Just make sure you keep all parts together with each carb, my biggest mistake was soaking the carb bodys, before reading up on them. My bike still runs great, but when I open it up at around 6000 rpms it will cough and sputter, then tke off like a bet out of hell, lol, but I believe over time my shaft sills have started breaking down, but at normal speeds my bike runs with any thing, without a problem. It will still cruise 85-90, on the freeway without sputtering, when I get over 110 she starts losing a little smoothness, but thats too fast anyway. some carbs have the pilot jets pressed in, my '79 standard dosn't. The clymer manual shows everything clearly about the carbs. Also with the kind helpful folks on here, you usually can get plenty of help, if you make a mistake. my bike now has around 84,000 on it.                     So never start a tire thread on a bike site neither.
                    Seriously though, even mediocre modern bike tires are better than the best that could be gotten 30 years ago when the XS11s were new so on this one, you simply cannot lose.

                      I just put a set of Bridgestone S11's on Betsy and I'm very happy with them. They've got them on sale at Motorcycle Superstore. $131 delivered to your door for a 110/90/19 and a 130/90/17 (size for a standard with a 110 up front). Nice dual compound tire that sticks well and should be fairly durable. Whatever kind of tire you put on it, make sure you scrub them in good before trying any aggressive cornering. New tires are notoriously slippery until they're broken in. Give them at least 100-200 miles before hitting the twisties hard.

                        Hi Chevy,
                        hope is cheap, which is why folks buy lottery tickets.
                        Same as lottery tickets though, unless you are incredibly lucky all you'll get from spraying carb cleaner at an assembled carb is disappointed.
                        Best is to take the carb completely apart (except for the butterflys, they are a swine to R&R) spray carb cleaner through every little hole & passage until it comes out the other end. If your carbs still have the slow running needles hidden under seals those needles absolutely must come out because those needles and the tiny passages behind them have 30 years-worth of crud in them.

                          I would like to make you an offer concerning overhauling your carbs. I don't know if you are aware of it, but my wife and I are hosting our third annual Meeting of the Minds, a sort of repair clinic, here at our house in a few weeks. If you would like to save some bucks, you can ship your carbs to me, and we will clean them thoroughly and set them up to stock specs. If you have new parts you want installed, send them along also. Cleaning and tweaking carbs is something many of us are very good at...now. I was hoping somebody that is attending the meeting would want to do carbs, but so far nobody has mentioned them.

                              i just found a friend of mine that will rebuild and clean the carbs for me and all i have to do is buy him a case of beer this is going to be sweet
