Hey, y'all;
New guy checkin' in. New to the XS, anyway; I'm actually a Vulcan 750 and 1500A (BUBF) nut, but fell into a '79 XS Eleven Special when a guy wanted it and an '86 VN750 out of his storage unit. I needed the '86 to finish an '87, and I wasn't about to pass up two free scoots at one shot. Besides, my neighbor had a '81 under his carport for a while, and sold it for a $100; I'd wanted it to play with, but he didn't tell me before he got rid of it.
I'm not new to working on bikes; I've had the engine out of my daily rider to replace the stator twice, and currently have the engine out of the '87. The 1500A has had the engine swapped into a titled frame, and the frame wiring is back in it. I also rebuild CVK carbs, when I can't get out of it. My regular ride is a '95 Pearl Teal Green/Candy Atlantic Blue VN750 with the rare Kawasaki Tour Pack fairing and hardbags.
I'll be lurkin' off and on, and jump in now and then if I can help, but mostly I'll be readin' and learnin' when I do check in. I do have a couple/three questions, and a comment...
----------
1) Where's the key code? On the Vulcans, it's stamped in the side of the ignition switch; same place on the Yamaha?
2) The XS came with a fairing, with air inlets between the headlight and turn signals letting out just below the windshield; Pacifico? Doesn't have the typical Vetter cutout at the windshield base. Windshield nice and clear, too.
3) How hard is it to punch the hingepin on the gas cap, without screwing sumpin' up? Came with a couple extra tanks...
----------
I got lucky. This thing also came with a set of universal mount hardbags, and a Yamaha trunk complete with two rail guard. I already have a set of Yamaha hardbags, complete with guards and a trailer hitch, that came off an 11 Special. I had planned on modifying the mounts to fit the BUBF; glad now I hadn't gotten around to it! One dresser bar, but I know where another set is, or was anyway. All the guards are gonna need rechroming.
The comment? That is one dinky rink handlebar; looks like it belongs on a lot smaller bike. I've read some of the comments about vibration; I can see why they came up. Seems GL1100 bars would be better than those baby buckhorns. Does have what looks like old Gen-mar risers, tho.
I see there's a few other members in the Houston area; somebody's brains are liable to get picked! <G>
